These Streets Will Make You Feel Brand New

I'm driving back to Connecticut this Sunday to catch up with my family before heading into New York for the launch party for Rue's third issue. Please flip through the issue if you haven't done so already; I know I'm biased but it's truly the best one yet. Pay special attention to the pieces on Brooke Giannetti, Margot Austin, Susanna Salk, and Jim Josephson and Erik Retzer — written by yours truly! I can't wait to celebrate with Crystal, Anne, Bri, and the gang at The New Traditionalists' showroom come Monday night. Will I be seeing any of you there?

The Big 2-1 (Four Days and Counting)

It's hard to believe that my twenty-first birthday is this coming Monday. This twentieth year has just flown by! I started my junior year at Bucknell in August, created this blog in November, left for France in January, landed my internship in June, and suddenly another year has gone by and it's time for one chapter to end and another to begin. It has been a big year for me in virtually every regard and I can't wait to see what the future has in store! Humor me with a little reflection on a few of my favorite memories...
{Source Unknown}
Living in Europe for six months was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will cherish forever and ever. My French host family and I were cut from the same cloth and I feel so fortunate to have met and gotten to know them to the extent that I did.
My semester abroad was a catalyst for what I'd like to think is remarkable personal growth. Do you remember my little personal victory at Villandry? I'll never forget it. I ended the semester feeling significantly more independent and naturally more worldly (and maybe even a teeny tiny bit better with maps? I won't push my luck).
While I miss dearly my Parisian cafés and jardins, I have a truly embarrassing number of photographs to help me savor those memories. I was heartbroken to say au revoir à la fin du semestre but I was so very ready to return home to my loving [American] family and friends. It has been a joy to reunite with my East Coast pals and I can't wait to see everyone else on campus in a few short weeks.
I feel endlessly fortunate to have met Monsieur Adler so shortly after my return and to have had the opportunity to work in his occasionally glamorous and always hilarious Soho studio for the summer.
I owe my parents for the road trip we took to my beloved Bucknell in central Pennsylvania to decorate my new boudoir. I am so delighted with the progress we've made and so excited for (okay, and a little overwhelmed by) all that's left to be done!

I'm looking forward to lots more lovely inspiration in the months to come and I'll hope you'll stay tuned for some exciting new developments in my neck of the woods.

It would make me one very happy twenty-one-year-old to have you all along for the ride!

homeward bound

it is with mixed emotions that i leave france today to return to connecticut for the summer. on the one hand, i will miss this country and my host family more than words can do justice. on the other, i could not be more excited to reunite with family and friends and return to routine and some decorating projects i can't wait to share with all of you. i'm taking a moment to reflect on some of the experiences i've had during my five months in europe and inviting you to see more on the travel blog i've kept over at mackenzie en france...
there were trips to the many châteaux of the loire valley, including a particularly trying trip to villandry...
michael and i spent valentine's day in paris...
i took a once-in-a-lifetime trip to barcelona with my dad...
i explored and adored amsterdam with michael...
i saw the breathtaking beaches and american cemetery of normandy...
my brother grayson and i frolicked in interlaken...
after which we went hang gliding in the swiss alps...
michael and i fell in love with venice...
we climbed the duomo in florence...
we went from the colosseum in rome...
to the parthenon in athens...
then there was that can't-look-away view in ios...
plus the donkey ride in santorini...

...followed by a whirlwind trip to london, prague, munich, salzburg, vienna, and istanbul with my mom and sister reilly (pictures to follow!).

it's been one hell of a semester and i am so incredibly blessed to have had this opportunity to see the world at such an early age. thank you, mom and dad — see you this afternoon!

happy weekend!

for those of you who haven't spent the past week traveling, congratulations on making it through the work week! thank you as always for your charming comments and emails — i'm sorry i'm a little behind in responding but of course i'll get back to you as soon as i can! i'm wishing you all a wonderful weekend...
whether you're on the road...
or home sweet home...
organizing indoors...

or entertaining out...
i hope your weekend includes a hint of whimsy...
and a whole lot of lovely.

'til monday, my dears!

bon voyage à moi!

hi everyone! thank you for another wonderful week of blogging. can you believe it's the weekend already? this weekend is particularly special because my mom and sister are flying to europe for one last eurotrip before i head stateside on the first of june.
i'll be passing the time until their arrival by soaking up the last of paris in the springtime...
eating some seasonal fare...
taking some pictures to remember my time here...
and catching some zzz's before the real fun starts.
wish me bon voyage, my dears!

p.s. if you have any travel recommendations — restaurants, sights, museums — for prague, munich, salzburg, vienna, or istanbul, i'm all ears! have a delightful weekend, loves!

london calling

my dears, can you believe it's the last day of april? my time in europe is winding down just as the weather is warming up, so you can bet i'll be making the most of it! i'm off to london this weekend for michael's birthday (he's turning 21 — this is big!). it will be fun to see him and a few friends before they head back to the states. here's a little weekend wardrobe inspiration for me and for you...
how about an effortlessly chic headwrap and a classic cardigan for traveling? (somebody please teach me how to do this without looking sloppy — i could just go incognito until my curly hair grows out!)

simple but chic layers for traipsing around the city on saturday, though i think it's still pants weather in london (i should check that out...).
something a little sexy and sparkly for the birthday festivities...
{corrie bond for marie claire}
...and some pretty little things to lounge around in come sunday.

what are you up to this weekend, my loves?

home sweet home (kind of)

well, my dears, i've done it. i've made it back to france and i couldn't be happier. or could i? i'm feeling a little like this:
but the thing is, i woke up at 5 o'clock this morning to hop on a 4-hour bus for a field trip south to périgord. the twenty consecutive days of travel plus the lack of sleep isn't ideal and, though i suppose i could have slept through the early morning bus rendez-vous, i do want to make the most of my remaining month in europe. this meant a little unpacking and repacking late last night:

so i could be ready to go first thing in the morning. they say to sleep when you're dead, right? with that in mind, i'm off to make the most of one of my final weekends. what are you up to? whatever it is, just keep trucking:

{corrie bond}
if i can do it, so can you! p.s. i know i use corrie bond and pamela hanson's photography too much than should be considered normal but i really can't help it. i could peruse their portfolios for hours — give it a go and you'll see what i mean! have a wonderful weekend!

April in... Athens

i'm going on my twentieth day of living out of a suitcase and getting very bored with the clothes i've packed. beating the heat in athens is no picnic and i'm ready for some lightweight spring clothes to keep me calm, cool, and collected in this stressful situation:

a colorful blouse for a casual daytime look...

{moschino cheap & chic spring/summer 2010 via style.com}
frilly and feminine eyelet to make the most of the temperate climes...

something a little fancier for dinnertime (we all know i love backless)...

{fendi spring/summer 2010 in new york magazine}
...though perhaps something a little more streamlined is in order. (rachel zoe just included these amazing sandals in her daily newsletter, the zoe report!)

p.s. i am supposed to fly from athens to paris with a layover in rome tomorrow... could this travel dilemma finally have come to an end? please wish me luck!

greetings from greece!

this is the vacation after the vacation. travel can be exhausting, you know? greece is beautiful and of course i'm taking hundreds of pictures. i hope you all had a relaxing weekend... my relaxation is just beginning! i'm planning on doing lots of this:
and a little of this:
and slipping into one of these:
stay tuned for plenty of pretty posts this week! i hope you all have a very merry monday!

time to travel

this is it, my loves! spring break has arrived and i am ready for an action-packed two weeks. here's the plan: two days in venice, a day in bologna, three days in florence, two days in rome, two days in athens, and six days lounging on the beach in ios. we have been planning this trip forever and i can hardly believe the time has finally come.
there will be lots of planes and trains and buses (the worst) but i'm going to enjoy every single second. michael and i are doing venice and bologna on our own, meeting up with his london friends for florence and rome, and then traveling with my tours friends for athens and ios. it will be such a great mix of down time and nights out! one week eating the world's best pizza, pasta, and gelato and another frolicking in the greek isles... what could possibly be better?
now before you tear up, i want you to know that i've planned ahead with two weeks of blog posts for you! that's right... you didn't really think i'd leave you hanging, did you?
which of these places have you visited? i'd love to hear your recommendations for "can't miss" restaurants and sights. scouring lonely planet is one thing, but personal travel tips are the best!
thank you for another wonderful week of blogging and have a happy weekend!

p.s. i always make travel look this good. don't you?
