could you? would you?

{kristin cavallari in people}
ladies (and gents?), what are our thoughts on pink and purple together? if you asked me about this combination sight unseen, i'd definitely say it's a no-no. yet the more i see, the more inclined i am to change my mind... what are your thoughts?

pink flowers in a purple room would be a good way to test out this trend.

or how about a walk-in closet with pinkish walls and lavender built-ins? hey, go big or go home, right?

{jessica stam's apartment by rafael de cardenas in elle décor}
the kind of all-out glamour you might only find in a supermodel's apartment. larger-than-life armchairs, a lucite coffee table, and floor-to-ceiling purple curtains... pourquoi pas?
i love the high impact drama of this space. it's so easy to wimp out when it comes to color, so i admire the designer of this space for using color for dining chairs and the light fixture in the formal dining room of all spaces.

blue is the new bold

happy monday, everyone! i hope you're all feeling rejuvenated from the weekend and getting ready to take on the week ahead!
everyone and her mother has been up in arms about the genius of this blue beauty and its victorian surroundings. (kudos to paula at two ellie for beating them to the punch.) let's take a moment to celebrate this dramatic hue in its prime.
a completely unexpected but couldn't-be-more-perfect royal blue headboard.
a saturated navy transforms a run-of-the-mill kitchen.
the tried-and-true combination of navy blue and hot pink. this one is seriously in the running for the color palette of my to-be-decorated senior year bedroom.
cadet blue has a starring role in this kitchen. isn't it fantastic with the white ceilings and wood trim?

perfection in navy blue and crisp white. further explanation not necessary.

black and white stripes

happy monday, everyone! it's so nice to be back. stripes are everywhere this spring, aren't they? i went shopping on friday and saw walls and walls of striped merchandise. of course, stripes aren't a mere trend but a design staple that have adapted seamlessly from fashion to interior design and back again. here are a host of different spaces that make use of one of design's tried-and-true classics: the black and white stripe.

two very different rooms with the same base: a black and white striped rug. available inexpensively at stores like ikea (here and here) and overstock (here), it's an easy look to introduce in your own home and an affordable starting point for all kinds of décor.

a bit more of a commitment are these upholstered occasional chairs. but because the black and white stripes act as a sort of neutral, i could see them working in any number of different spaces. how about behind a desk or vanity — or perhaps at the heads of the table for a dinner party?

i love the graphic punch of striped wallpaper in a small space like a bathroom or a foyer. it's the perfect mix of classic and fun and a great backdrop for your other belongings — art, books, plants, hot pink towels...

the easiest way to bring stripes into your home. try these for an inexpensive way to try out the look before making any big decisions.

this pièce de résistance is one of my favorite spaces of all time. how playfully brilliant is the combination of scalamandre's zebra wallpaper, white subway tile, and a black and white striped shower curtain? only kate. (though if you've mastered a similar look in your own home, you're simply obliged to send me the before and after!)

have a lovely start to the week, ladies!

neutral territory

i think it's only appropriate to preface our weekend trip to switzerland with a few of my favorite neutral spaces. i am quite certain that our whirlwind trip, which is to include hang gliding in the swiss alps, will be anything but neutral, but it seems only fair to honor the country's historically unbiased stance with a hearty helping of simple and pretty.
rug: good. chairs: great. worn metal table (look close!): sheer brilliance.
i spy with my little eye... one of my favorite materials, lucite.
i love the range of seating options here: leather wingback, white sofas, modern occasional chair. the antler chandelier is a perfect finishing touch and i love the wire pendants too. wow, is there anything i don't love about his portfolio?
{above three rooms, gunkelman flesher via desire to inspire}
i'm not sure what that little wooden cubby is for but, thanks to the exposed brick and the cool light fixture, i think we can agree to let it slide.
i would love to cozy up with a good book on one of these chaises longues.
pendant lamps for freeing up space on your bedside table = genius.
i love the hexagonal floor tiles in this otherwise ordinary bathroom.

like the gallery walls, like the hat on the bust, like the funky silhouette of the chairs, like it all.

white walls, dark floors, and a whole lot of pretty in between.

before we leave, i wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your lovely comments and emails this week. your creativity and kindness never cease to amaze me. i'll be catching up on my blog reading when i return from my weekend away so i'll be returning the favor soon enough! thank you again and have yourselves a fantastic weekend!

because everything is prettier in pink

on the heels (hehe) of yesterday's pink rooms, here is a smattering of to-die-for pink shoes.
i wear my cowboy boots all the time, but i think i'd have to save these ones for special occasions. luxury rebel sandy suede booties in fuchsia, $250.
pedicured toes peeking out from beneath girly ruffles? yes, please. steve madden florale flats, $70.
did you not all die when you saw these in your inbox on monday? tory burch wrap up heel in lipstick pink, $325.
i love the architectural details of this prettiest-in-pink pump. elizabeth & james mason suede platform pumps, $350.
a flattering shape in the prettiest pale pink. j.crew alecia suede platform peep-toes in paris pink (!), $265.

pretty in pink and just in time

even those who hate the holiday can surely appreciate the inundation of pink everything, right? below are some of my favorite {pink} finds of late.
a hot pink chair becomes a provocative focal point in an otherwise blank canvas.
a pink window ups the charm in an old-school kitchen (as if that refurbished post office unit weren't enough).
the perfect way to bring a small dose of valentine's day into your home: a pretty pink bouquet. (though the dining chairs would work nicely too.) i hereby dare you to nix the red roses and go for something a little less obvious.
go big or go home, right? a heavily saturated hue dominates a family's foyer.
i can't decide which i prefer: the overwhelming presence of the egg chair or the discrete display of the disco ball in the bookshelves.
this room is valentine's day.

take a chance {red and purple}

i was surprised to find that i love the combination of red and purple — strange to see that two highly saturated colors could work so well together! after first spotting the picture of kate walsh, i had to try it out for myself, pairing a purple tank top and a red skirt with nude heels, and received lots of compliments on the unique color combination (even with my red hair!).
they say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery... i'm pretty sure kate walsh (fellow redhead!) rocked this look first but i'd be pretty happy if miranda kerr of all people decided to follow in my stead. was there ever a more striking woman on this planet? i think she is gorgeous.

i prefer the nude heels to the black but you get the idea.

this unexpected combination has turned up in interior design as well. here red beams and purple flowers provide an easy introduction for those with fear of commitment.

a red and purple liberty print for the walls and canopy — not for the faint of heart but i think it's quite pretty!

a purple sitting room segways into a red dining room.

a red painting jazzes up various shades of purple. who else is picking up on this trend?

oh, what do you know? kate spade! the inscription on the inside of her idiom bangle ($78) reads "take a chance." now that's what i like to hear!
