homeward bound

it is with mixed emotions that i leave france today to return to connecticut for the summer. on the one hand, i will miss this country and my host family more than words can do justice. on the other, i could not be more excited to reunite with family and friends and return to routine and some decorating projects i can't wait to share with all of you. i'm taking a moment to reflect on some of the experiences i've had during my five months in europe and inviting you to see more on the travel blog i've kept over at mackenzie en france...
there were trips to the many châteaux of the loire valley, including a particularly trying trip to villandry...
michael and i spent valentine's day in paris...
i took a once-in-a-lifetime trip to barcelona with my dad...
i explored and adored amsterdam with michael...
i saw the breathtaking beaches and american cemetery of normandy...
my brother grayson and i frolicked in interlaken...
after which we went hang gliding in the swiss alps...
michael and i fell in love with venice...
we climbed the duomo in florence...
we went from the colosseum in rome...
to the parthenon in athens...
then there was that can't-look-away view in ios...
plus the donkey ride in santorini...

...followed by a whirlwind trip to london, prague, munich, salzburg, vienna, and istanbul with my mom and sister reilly (pictures to follow!).

it's been one hell of a semester and i am so incredibly blessed to have had this opportunity to see the world at such an early age. thank you, mom and dad — see you this afternoon!

mirror, mirror {on or off the wall}

hello, lovelies! how was your weekend? i hope it was all kinds of wonderful. let's start off the new week with a heavy dose of glam — and honestly, does it get any more glamorous than mirrored surfaces?
a unique mirror defines a nondescript vanity.
the unexpected texture on the nightstand helps this whitewashed bedroom go from blah to bananas. (can you tell i've been catching up on past seasons of the rachel zoe project? guilty.)
the king of happy chic sends a pink foyer over the top with a mirrored console.
how about some simple moulding and flat mirrors to completely transform an empty wall?
every designer knows there's no better way to visually expand a room.

how do you bring glamour to your home?

happy weekend!

for those of you who haven't spent the past week traveling, congratulations on making it through the work week! thank you as always for your charming comments and emails — i'm sorry i'm a little behind in responding but of course i'll get back to you as soon as i can! i'm wishing you all a wonderful weekend...
whether you're on the road...
or home sweet home...
organizing indoors...

or entertaining out...
i hope your weekend includes a hint of whimsy...
and a whole lot of lovely.

'til monday, my dears!

can't get enough {calligraphy}

i know i've already professed my love of calligraphy but seeing new examples of artists' work just makes me so happy. i desperately want to learn!
can any of you do calligraphy? if so, how did you learn? was it tough? tell me everything!

{all calligraphy is by the incredibly talented neither snow spotted on the always inspiring delight by design}

framed fabric

lately i'm loving the idea of framing fabric — it's a fun way to introduce color and a compromise between blank walls and a long-term investment in wallpaper. what are your thoughts?

Style Icon {Gwyneth Paltrow}

who doesn't love gwyneth paltrow? besides her impressive résumé, i find we could learn a lot from her fashion choices both on and off the red carpet. she certainly knows what works for her — she loves the color black but will occasionally introduce navy or white, she knows how to rock a daringly short minidress, and she practically patented the blunt bob we see her with today.
rocking a balenciaga lbd.
rocker chic in black balmain.
a barely there minidress by preen.
a personal favorite: paltrow steals the spotlight in racy stella mccartney.
classic yves saint laurent.
stunning in dramatic floor-length ferragamo.
lovely in (backless) lace by antonio berardi.
testing out the nude trend in elie saab haute couture.
straying (just barely!) from her favored black in navy chanel.
a day in the life: sitting front row at adolfo dominguez.
a fresh take on summery style in giambattista valli.
if it ain't broke, don't fix it: paltrow nails it in another stella mccartney number.
walking the walk in an alice + olivia coat and christian louboutin booties.
showing up to husband chris martin's coldplay concert.
a never-fails color combination for when there's nothing else you want to wear.
her statuesque frame pulls off head-to-toe white beautifully.
wedge booties put an edgy spin on a classic tweed blazer.
lighting up a tv appearance in a sparkly gold jacket.

what do you think of her style? any favorite looks?
