THOUGHTS ON SELF-EMPLOYMENT AND SUPPORTING ONE ANOTHER.

Let's talk.

Lately I've read a couple blog posts about the rise of self-employment among bloggers. This is a movement I am proud to be part of and I love seeing the various ventures my friends have launched off of their blogs: consulting gigs, e-commerce sites, interior design firms, styling businesses, and more.

It saddens me then to read backlash from people who write public, negative, and thinly-veiled commentary about those who have left salaried positions to strike out on their own with limited business education and job experience. The life of an entrepreneur (one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise) isn't the right path for everybody. I get that. But if it is your chosen path, who's to tell you you're wrong for pursuing it? While I like to think that my personal choices are just that — personal — I do feel compelled to reflect on the subject at hand.

I started blogging in 2009, graduated from Bucknell in 2011 with a major in French, and launched my e-commerce site in early 2012. My job experience at the time was limited to high school summer jobs in retail, college summer internships with Ralph Lauren and Jonathan Adler, a post-graduate internship with Rue Magazine, a stint in public relations in New York, and freelance writing work for Matchbook Magazine. I took a handful of business classes in college but nothing to suggest I'd be running a small business after graduation.

I'm honest about those things and always have been. I've never pretended to know more than I do and I've certainly never been shy about asking for help when I need it. I meet with my SCORE mentor every few weeks, have monthly Skype calls with fellow bloggers and small business owners, and just wrapped up a month-long business workshop to address questions I had going into my first holiday season. I run things by my amazing parents on a daily basis and have an accountant who handles some of the financial processes I never mastered in school. Everything I've learned about buying wholesale, managing inventory, and packaging orders has been learned entirely by trial and error.

And you know what? I'm really, really proud of everything I've learned and accomplished in the past year. Quitting my job and starting a small business wasn't a decision I made lightly and I acknowledge that it wouldn't work for everyone. For me, I was deeply, genuinely unhappy with the path I was on and I made a big change. If it was foolish of me to leave a job I hated and start something of my own, it would have been ten times as foolish for me to keep doing something that made me miserable, day in and day out. I'm cool with people who have desk jobs, people who raise their families full-time, and people who march to the beat of their own drum, whatever that entails. Blogging has opened up a world of opportunities for me and I commend anyone who's taking similar opportunities and running with them. Whether that means landing your dream job, relishing a creative outlet outside of work, or, yes, launching a small business, I commend and support you.

Launching a small business has been a risk, financially, personally, and professionally. It's something I always intended to do, whether at age 22 or 52. Realizing it would never be the perfect time and weary of spending my days wondering, "What if?", I went for it. I took that risk and I'm working my ass off every single day to make it worth it. I won't glorify the hard work or the long hours, but I love what I do and I'm more grateful than you know to each and every customer and reader who have lent their support. And if sales taper off after a year or five years, I'll change course and reevaluate all over again. I'm less afraid of that now than I was a year ago.

Let's applaud one another's choices, support them if we like, and keep it to ourselves if we don't. Madeleine Albright said, "There's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women." I think we can all agree the world is a better place when we do.

Favorite snaps from last week's trip to Nantucket...
A new read I'm loving // My new favorite ballet flats (now on sale!) // Bangles from Design Darling and J.Crew // Carrying Coach onto the ferry
Exterior inspiration // Waking up to this little guy // The needlepoint belt my grandmother is making for me!
Flowers, lobster, and my grandmother's lightship basket
Iced coffee // Rachel Pally dress // Shopping in town (loved this picnic basket and this bedding)

It's funny how many pictures I take when I'm out and about! Believe me when I say my daily life looks more like me in front of my laptop wearing pajamas ;) Do you have any summer trips planned?

IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS

New flats from Tuckernuck // Monogrammed ice buckets headed off to their new homes // Making an effort to cook (I've tried this, this, and this) // Rory sitting on my feet during a summer storm // Striped espadrilles from J.Crew (on mega sale) // Le Pens in my monogrammed pencil cup // A preppy pillow pairing (here and here) // Neon pink shorts from J.Crew // Ginger jar matches in a tortoiseshell bowl // New arrivals in the boutique // Still in love with this little face

SUMMER LOVIN'

A few highlights from last week's jaunt to Nantucket...
Family meals and Design Darling topiaries at the dinner table // Morning strolls around town, iced lattés in hand // Quality time with my adorable grandmother (and number one fan) // Wearing this tunic to the beach and to dinner // Traveling home in this dress (and possibly never taking it off)

It requires a four hour drive and a two hour ferry ride but somehow family trips to Nantucket are always worth the while. Note to self: schedule next weekend trip asap!

WEEK IN REVIEW

Thank God it's Friday! And for most of you the start of a long weekend. Cheers to that! Here are a few snapshots from the past week...
Spent an afternoon in Rowayton complete with ice cream cones and puppies. Oh, summer, I love thee.
Proved that Rory fits inside my K. Slademade clutch. I mean... I will be carrying both with me everywhere this summer.
Reading material for the train? I prefer the newest J.Crew catalog. I'm particularly coveting these
Chassity was kind enough to book Drybar appointments before the start of Blogfest! Seriously this place is my current obsession. You choose your desired look off of a menu (I went with the Mai Tai!) and pay just $40 to walk out the door feeling like a rockstar. And Drybar founder Alli Webb happened to be in New York that day! Meg, Erika, and I even got to pose for a picture. Hello, starstruck!
Insanely gorgeous peonies at a Blogfest event at Hearst Tower. So inspiring to listen to panels hosted by the editors-in-chief of House Beautiful and Veranda!
The Elle Decor show house was nothing short of amazing. And I got to chat with Lee Kleinhelter, owner of Atlanta boutique Pieces and designer of this fabulous space just off the foyer. She even remembered me from our occasional chats on Twitter! Maybe it's because I was wearing the same top as in my profile picture ;)
Meandered through the National Stationery Show with the darling Sarah and stopped at her friend Catherine's booth. Her shop Printerette is just as charming as she is!
Since then I've been catching up on sleep, orders, and emails, in that order. My sweet dad picked these peonies from our garden and put them on my desk in a Design Darling vase! It's the little things :)

What have you been up to this week and what are your plans for Memorial Day weekend? Have a good one!

LITTLE MOMENTS

As part of my efforts to live in the moment, I've been making an effort to capture some of the lovely little moments in my day on Instagram. This week that's meant a favorite nail color, a family dinner, and lots of pretty products from the boutique...
(1) Leopard and zebra matches and the #ThingsWeLove pencil set packed up for a customer
(2) Essie Fiesta, navy link bangle, and sparkly Toms for my sister's softball game
(3) Coral candelabra and ginger jar matches for Mother's Day dinner

(5) Rory is the cutest distraction, um, ever
(6) New Port Winsor tunic that I seriously cannot wait to wear
(7) Embroidered pillow from the boutique that's pretty perfect for summer
(8) Monogrammed salt and pepper shakers (in my parents' monogram!) that make me smile

Every now and then it's nice to stop what I'm doing and actually appreciate my surroundings. What's one little thing you're loving lately?

#LOVEMYJACKS

Last Thursday I had the pleasure of co-hosting a party at the Jack Rogers store in New York with Carly and Fred. It was so much fun to meet several Design Darling readers (and customers!) as well as a couple blogger friends I'd been dying to meet forever!
Michael and I met up with Hannah, Stephanie, and Carly before the event to catch up and grab a drink before heading to the party. I hadn't met Hannah and Stephanie before and was so impressed they made the trip from D.C. and back for the party! How fun are everyone's dresses?
I gave the girls these bangles from the boutique and somehow everyone found one or two that worked with their outfit!
I wore this Emma Graham dress and a J.Crew pearl necklace that my mom gave me for graduation last year (similar here). And you can bet I was wearing my favorite pair of Jacks!
There was lots of shopping going on during the event and my biggest temptation (which I successfully resisted — for now!) was this pair from their collaboration with fabric house Quadrille. (They'll be available on the website in early June!)
Shoe shot! My monogrammed Jacks and Carly's platinum wedges.
I always have so much fun with this girl! Here's hoping we'll be invited back next year ;)

Living in the present...

In a break from our usual topics of discussion here on Design Darling, I thought I'd share an epiphany I experienced this afternoon. Lately I've found myself feeling inadequate, wanting more, and thinking I could should be doing everything better/faster/smarter. It doesn't help that I'm 22 and following bloggers who are 3, 5, 10 years older than I am — young women I admire and who seem to have it "all figured out."

The fact that I'm lucky to do what I love is not lost on me. I am so blessed to have a successful blog and online business — and I mean successful in the sense that I am proud of both projects and excited for where I plan to take them in the future. But it's easy to look around and feel like I'm not doing well at all. I live at home to save money. I'm lousy at making time for life outside of work. My inbox is out of control and my parents' dining room is a mess of boxes, inventory, and packing supplies.

I had a mini meltdown earlier thinking about all the things I could be doing differently. It's taken me three years to get my blog to where it is now (how envious I am of all the overnight success stories!) and still I wish it were bigger. How do I become one of those young women who affords a gorgeous apartment, blogs original photos every day, cooks homemade meals every night (frozen pizza doesn't count), exercises five days a week, fills her closet with new clothes, keeps a tidy workspace, makes time for happy hour every night, and gets eight hours of sleep a night to boot?

The reality, of course, is that that woman doesn't exist. We all put our best selves out there on our blogs, but there are of course bad days (mean comments, technological difficulties, and mini meltdowns alike) behind the scenes. But when I take a moment to count the blessings I have right now — when I remind myself I'm doing the best that I can — I realize I'm actually doing just fine.

All that said, I'm going to make a bigger effort to live in the present and appreciate all the awesome things I've got going for me right now. Who's with me?

For Fenway

I normally start each week with "Happy Monday!" but I'd be remiss if I did not mention something that's occupying the bulk of my thoughts today. Our puppy Fenway unexpectedly passed away over the weekend and our hearts are full.
Fenway lived a full and happy life curled up at the foot of my bed or perched in my lap as I typed many a blog post. In fact we'd come to think of him as Design Darling's very cute (though largely unhelpful) resident intern.
We've spent the past few days remembering all the times he made us laugh and the many everyday moments we took for granted. My dad, the biggest Red Sox fan I know, was quick to point out that Fenway led the team to two World Series championships in his seven years, a feat that many others had waited 86 years for.
Here's hoping heaven is full of cuddles, doggy friends, and people food. Fenny, we love you and miss you more than you know.

Matchbook January 2012

If you haven't already, you must go read Matchbook's January issue right this instant! In addition to the brilliant work of my dear friend Shannon, you'll find two pieces written by yours truly! It was an honor to sit down with Jessie Randall in her SoHo office and chat about her bustling shoe company, Loeffler Randall. Then artist Ashley Longshore had me in stitches over the phone with tales of her celebrity encounters (ahem, Blake Lively and Salma Hayek!). It's thrilling to see my name in one of my very favorite publications, next to some of my very favorite people — and I couldn't be happier that I'm officially a Matchbook girl! :)

Happy New Year!

2011 has been a big year: I graduated from college, moved to San Francisco, moved back to Connecticut, landed a job in New York, quit that job in New York, and decided to start my own business. All the while I was crossing things off my 101 in 1001 list, which I've now organized HERE so you can see every goal I've ever shared all in one place. Check it out and let me know which goals you hope to accomplish in the next 2.75 years!

I have big things in store for 2012 and I can't wait to share them with you every step of the way! I'll be launching my business, tackling more 101 in 1001 tasks, and of course sharing lots of pretty clothes and rooms as we go. Thank you for stopping by each day and lending your support in comments, emails, tweets, etc. I couldn't ask for better readers and I'm so excited for what this next year will bring! Thank you and Happy New Year!!!

A few things...

1. I might have to let our dog Coach wear bows on a regular basis because I've decided this shot from Christmas morning is frame-worthy.

2. My Joss & Main sale ends in 24 hours! A few of my favorite items are still available: this hot pink slipper chair ($109), this aqua linen pillow ($79), and this Jonathan Adler lamp ($154). Sign up HERE and check it out!

3. Design Darling, L.L.C. became official this morning!!! I can't wait to fill you all in on what I've been working on. Let's just say there's a BIG surprise coming your way!

Merry Christmas!

Wishing you and yours a very merry weekend filled with Christmas traditions...
twinkling lights,
festive decorations,
your favorite foods,
and lots of special moments you'll cherish for years to come.

Here & There

Books and things on my desk / My favorite cocktail ring, a gift from my boyfriends' parents
A favorite snap from Lucky Magazine / My ever-present to do list

A few sneak peeks from life of late, as some of you may already have seen on Twitter. (Are we following each other yet?!) Clearly propensity for office supplies (namely, these notebooks, this planner, and these scissors) is alive and well.

Change of plans!

Happy Monday, everyone! You might have noticed that I've been blogging, pinning, posting, tumbling, and tweeting quite a bit more this past week so let's cut to the chase: I quit my job and I'm moving on to greener pastures! Sometimes you just know when something isn't a good fit and have to acknowledge that your head and your heart are pulling you in a different direction. I'm grateful for the learning experience and excited to reconnect with the things I love: blogging, writing, and a few other fun projects that I have up my sleeve!
Because I'll be spending some time on these projects before thinking about looking for a full-time job, I'd love to hear from any of you who are or have been self-employed. What is the most rewarding aspect and what is your biggest challenge? I would be so happy to hear from you!

Life According To My iPhone

The untimely death of Apple visionary Steve Jobs this week seems like an appropriate time to demonstrate the importance of technology in my life. Like many of you, I'm a once-you-go-Mac-you-never-go-back kind of girl. I work on a Macbook, blog on a Macbook Pro, and do just about everything else on an iPhone. Here are a few recent snaps taken with my iPhone and Instagram...
I'm trying to take a few on-the-go outfit pictures each week. Can you tell oxford shirts and skinny jeans are something of a uniform for me?
When I'm not racing to work or dashing to catch the next train, it's nice to take a moment to capture the city (even if it requires being that girl pausing on the sidewalk with iPhone in the air). The magic of Grand Central Station is never lost on me!
And lest you get the impression that I'm spending weekends in the wilderness (that was one time, I promise), here we have a sunset snapped from my front yard, a boulder field on last weekend's hike, the boat yard the train passes on my morning commute, and a tree in a friend's yard on a particularly beautiful day.
- - -
I hope you all have a moment to stop and smell the roses this weekend, even if it's through the lens of your beloved iPhone. It's rather fun to look back on! Have a good one and see you back here on Monday!

It's My Birthday!

8/9/89 — that's me! My red eye flight from San Francisco to New York arrived bright and early and I'm spending the day celebrating in my own special way: having my hair cut, eating dinner with my family and my boyfriend, and seeing my little brother's summer play. I couldn't think of a better birthday present than coming back home and catching up with those I've missed most!
