the look for less {patric johansson}

i'm sorry to report that my boyfriend and i are among the millions of travelers stranded in europe due to flight cancellations caused by the volcanic eruptions in iceland. now it's simply a waiting game before the ash clears up and the airlines get back on their feet. keep your fingers crossed for us that it will be sooner rather than later!

in the mean time, i'm keeping myself busy reading all of your blogs and browsing the portfolios of some of my favorite designers and photographers. (it's 5 euros for 10 hours of wifi at starbucks in athens — thank god!) one such portfolio is that of photographer patric johansson, who photographed the following home for elle interiƶr a while back. the primarily black and white palette and the luxurious accents make this a beautiful space that i'm confident i could recreate on a budget. watch and learn...
the foundation is simple: white paint, one black accent wall, dark floors, and abundant natural light. the big furniture pieces can be found inexpensively, too.
how's this for a big black sofa? the proportions are great and the price can't be beat. a few throw pillows in the same palette and you'll be good to go!

for the coffee table, a wooden trunk is a must. i love this option (thank you, camila, for the link to this site!) but the price is still a little steep, even if it is a great value. a simple search on ebayor your local craigslist could yield a better deal, depending on where you live and what you'd have to pay for shipping.
our chaise lounge is the best seat in the house and these ikea versions offer a great bang for your buck. again all you'll need to recreate the look is a rectangular pillow and a cozy white throw for each chair!
the gallery wall is an essential aspect of this space. when creating your own version of this look, you'll do best to stick to black and white prints. that said, take creative liberty with the content — it's not so much the subject matter but rather the style that counts.
i like this chair print, which captures both my love of design and also some of the architectural detail in the space that johansson photographed. with sites like art.com selling inexpensive prints in every size and style imaginable, you're bound to find something that speaks to you!
another guideline is to vary the colors and sizes of the frames you use. these gold frames are a bargain and could work vertically or horizontally. i've also heard good things about ikea's ribba series (i promise ikea isn't paying me to write this post, though i wish they were!) which come in a variety of sizes and could be mixed in with the gold frames to achieve a more organic look. speaking of keeping the space from feeling too rigid, the end table here is lightweight and doesn't take up too much space.
this decidedly mobile option from overstock could be easily repositioned for couch potato moments or cocktail parties. dare i say it even has more style than the one in our inspiration room?
the zebra rug ties in the white cabinetry with the dark accents and, lucky for us, inexpensive options abound.
zebra hide rug, $83 for 5' x 7'
how about this offering from overstock? i like the irregular shape but it's the price that really caught my attention. $83 for a 5' x 7' rug? out of this world!
the zebra print doesn't stop there. more art, this time casually propped against a wall, looks effortless but makes a big impact.
mike prowles print, $45+ depending on size
another art.com find to the rescue!
prop your print on a decorative box to continue the naturally elegant look. i love the feel of these boxes from target, even if they're not a spot on replica.
don't forget a silver tray and various objets d'art to top it off.
it's hard to tell from this photograph whether this lamp is clear or metallic so i've gone ahead and found versions of both.
replace the boring white with a black shade to duplicate the dramatic look of the vignette above. stack a couple of design books and a few more trinkets and your room will be as luxe as the one johansson so beautifully captured.

what do you all think of this space? i had no idea a black couch, black accent wall, and dark floors could look so radiant. the accessories — zebra everything, natural wood, a fur throw, etc. — keep the space fun and casually elegant. and that's never a bad way to start a new week, right?

happy friday!

our week in greece is nearing its end and i have to admit that a teeny tiny part of me is getting excited to go home... er, back to france. vacation has been wonderful but i'm feeling ready to sleep in my own bed again. does anyone know the feeling? in the meantime, we'll be crossing our fingers that the volcanic ash doesn't keep us from returning to paris on sunday... eek!
i hope you all have a lovely weekend...
...whether you're tidying up around the house,
doing a little primping,
spending time with the ones you love,
catching up on sleep,
or simply being fabulous. i'll see you next week!

the look for less {scalloped shorts}

if you're loving the look of see by chloƩ's scalloped shorts ($295), i've got great news for you! a recent perusal at urban outfitters yielded the following lookalikes:
now they're not available in white (yet?) but i think they're adorable in black and capture the scalloped detail that has made the see by chloƩ option so popular. style your lookalikes with a crisp black button-down:
j.crew slim stretch shirt, $49.50 (originally $59.50)
cinch a bow around your waist:
and finish the look with a fresh take on the classic gladiator sandal:
...for a look that screams classic chic for day and night. top it off with a black blazer for chilly nights:
...and you're good to go! what do you think?

more blog love

just when i thought awards season was over, it seems in the blogworld it's still going strong. big hugs to amy of tastes like red, who gave me the beautiful blogger award a little while back! i am to rattle off seven (hopefully) unknown facts about myself and pass along the title to seven other lovely bloggers. after tuesday's post, you might know everything about me by week's end!

1. i go to bucknell university in lewisburg, pennsylvania. i am majoring in french language & literature and minoring in art history. i have loved studying abroad in france and admire many things about the french way of life... from the beautiful language to the famed fashion (not to mention a national obsession with bread and cheese), i'm hooked.

2. for my senior year at bucknell, i will be moving into an off-campus house with my seven best friends. decorating my bedroom will be my first design project since choosing paint colors and bed linens for my bedroom at home circa age twelve and i couldn't be more excited. while i have loved most everything about my semester abroad, i can't wait to get home and get decorating! the room is currently big and boring... but i prefer the term "blank canvas."

3. my family and i are obsessed with the office. i also watch grey's anatomy, gossip girl, and anything on bravo (flipping out and the rachel zoe project are particular favorites) but the office is my all-time favorite.

4. i am a boston red sox fan. i remember staying up with my dad to watch the american league championship series against the yankees in 2004 like it was yesterday. after the red sox went on to beat the cardinals in four games, he was quick to remind me how lucky i was to only have had to wait fifteen years before seeing them win the world series, as that year marked the end of their 86 year curse. my grandfather, an equally diehard fan, exclaimed that he now could die happy having seen them won.

5. i was a competitive gymnast for most of my childhood. this was not a hobby or a pastime but a way of life — and i have the leotards, trophies, and video footage to prove it. after a collegiate stint with cheerleading ended following my freshman year, i really need to find an exercise regime that i can stick to!

6. i love elephants. my sister painted me an elephant that hangs above my dresser in my bedroom at home and it rocks. i wish i had a picture to share!

7. i desperately wish i were artistic. my dad can draw and my sister can paint and i would love to be able to do either one.

as for the seven bloggers to whom i'd like to pass on this award, i'd like to focus on fellow fledgeling bloggers — ladies like myself who are newish to the blogworld (within the past year or so) and already making their voices heard!

marija of holding court
debby lee of inspired design
roxy of my cup of te
catherine of the shiny pebble

another thank you goes out to the adorable ashley at sweet southern prep for giving me the honest scrap award. go check out her blog if you haven't already! she is the sweetest. for fear of boring you all, i'll simply redirect you to my previous post of ten things i love rather than delving into ten new facts about myself. thank you all for thinking of me and for stopping by each day — you all are the best!

sculpture at home

everyone loves a piece of attractive artwork, don't they? a personal photograph or a larger-than-life painting can make the room. an often overlooked form of artwork for the home is sculpture. i can't think of a single example of sculpture in our own home but, judging by these spaces, that might be something to reconsider. what's your take?
a stately bust gives a colorful space regal flair.
unconventional art in the form of two interlocking tusks forms a focal point in this graphic living room.
how do we feel about a horse in the home?
this sculpture might be a little much but i love the painted floors, stacked books, and photographs on the floor.

merci beaucoup!

as if all of your wonderful comments and emails don't bring enough happiness to my life, the lovely beatriz at that girl in pearls gave me (and nine other amazing bloggers!) the happy 101 award the week before last (sorry for the delay!). in keeping with tradition, i am to list ten things that make me happy and choose ten more bloggers to award! here goes, in no particular order...

1. flowers
i'm not much for gardening (too dirty!) but flowers definitely make me happy. maybe my mother's love of gardening will rub off on me one day...

2. raspberries
i did take up a more-than-typical interest in gardening the summer that we attempted to grow raspberries in our backyard vegetable garden. there's something so refreshing about this pretty fruit. i'll never understand why some people don't care for them!

3. summertime
i don't know whether it's the anticipation of nantucket summers, the fourth of july, sudden thunderstorms, pretending to know how to swim, or my august birthday, but i look forward to summer all year long.

4. lemonade, preferably pink

speaking of summer, is there anything so refreshing on a hot day as pink lemonade? sure, i'll drink the real thing too, but i love the artificially sugary and pretty in pink version best. it's like happy in a cup!

5. paper goods

{thank you letterpress card by ice cream social, $4}

i believe in personalized stationery, love letters, thank you cards, postcards... i hand wrote more than twenty thank you notes after my internship with ralph lauren last summer! it's the right thing to do and, judging my the collection of my notes on my grandmother's refrigerator, a handwritten note rarely goes unappreciated. writing and receiving handwritten letters and notes always makes me happy.

6. manicures and pedicures
{essie's mademoiselle}
{essie's fiesta}
i am the worst at painting my own nails and love the chance to slip away from home with my mom and sister and treat ourselves to the occasional manicure and pedicure. i like pale pink for my fingers and hot pink or red for my toes. but the best part is reading the names of all the polishes! do you think you could name nail polishes or crayon colors for a living? i would love that!

7. travel
despite my horrible sense of direction, traveling is one of my ultimate sources of happiness. spending the semester in europe has been wonderful for so many reasons, but travel is way up there. there's nothing quite like exploring a new place for the first time — and even getting lost can turn into unexpected fun!

8. being a redhead
i've been on the receiving end of my fair share of ginger jokes, but being a redhead makes me feel special and different. my favorite is when people ask me if it's real. my go-to response is of course that color like mine doesn't come in a bottle. ;)

9. books
i'd be lying if i denied that my parents used to pay my siblings and i a penny a page of every book we read. maybe it was the financial motivation, but i've been hooked for as long as i can remember. i could spend hours in any bookstore or library.

10. love
love in all its forms is an unending source of happiness. naturally i love my family, my friends, and my boyfriend... but seeing an old couple smiling and holding hands is enough to turn even my worst day around. isn't love the best?

now it's my turn to award ten other bloggers who bring happiness to my day! while there are so many blogs i read (currently 62 on my blogroll and adding new ones all the time!) i'm holding myself to ten for the sake of following the rules. and the winners are...
carlee and tiffany of deliciously organized
elizabeth of e tells tales
christina of full house
mara of m loves m
crystal of plush palate
paula of two ellie

a heartfelt thank you goes out to frances at beautiful interiors and 18th century style as well for giving me a little shoutout on her blog too! it makes me endlessly happy to know that people are reading my blog and that what i write resonates with you in some way. blogging is the best!
