CAMERA RECOMMENDATIONS?

I've been using this camera since the semester I studied abroad and it's seen its fair share of wear and tear over the past couple years. I've been thinking about upgrading for the sake of better product shots for the boutique and better outfit posts for the blog. I'm dying to know if any of you have DSLR cameras you'd recommend!
Ideally I'm looking for something that takes great pictures, doesn't weigh a ton, and looks good with a pretty camera strap ;) Suggestions? Ready, set, go!

I am getting the Canon Rebel T3i soon! I've heard it's an excellent camera and great first DSLR.

I love my Canon Rebel T2i. It has most of the same specs as the T3i, but doesn't have the pull out screen. They are both great options for a beginner though.

I use a Nikon D60 and you can use different lenses for different styles of shots (close up, wide)! I love it!

I've been using my Canon Rebel for a few years now and I love it! I actually just purchased a new one a few days ago as a back up camera!

I have a first edition Nikone D50 - the new D series around these days are much lighter, but taking amazing photos. If you want a long-term performer, I would definitely go for some version of a DSLR, whether you prefer Nikon or Canon I really believe you can get the same quality.

Lenses are an investment, but as you acquire them over time, you can keep them around re-use when you upgrade to, say a larger/better camera body, which a lot of people do once they have kids, etc etc. It truly is the best quality photo you can get and SO worth the money.

You can definitely get great photos with smaller cameras, but I think it takes a lot more skill/training. The DSLRs these days make it so easy to get great shots, and you can only go up from there!

The Nikon 1 is a new series from Nikon. A bit on the pricey side- but it has DSLR quality with point&shoot size! Much easier to carry around.

I got the Nikon D3000 before studying abroad this spring and I love it! I couldn't be happier with it!

After doing a ton of research, we JUST recently purchased the Nikon D5100 and the 35mm f/1.8G lens, which is excellent for low light and portraits. We were also looking at the Nikon D3100 which is slightly smaller, but ended up going with the D5100 for the faster shutter speed and flip out screen.

I have a Canon Rebel XS with a 50mm lens that I adore. But I'm also not a big Nikon fan. You should check out Victoria's (vmac+cheese) Alt series for camera recommendations! She has a really great round-up.

I have a Canon D60 and love it! It's just fancy enough that I feel like it'll last me as I become a better photographer but still not thousands.

I've had a Nikon D5000 for a little over a year now, and I love it! It's got great specs and takes good, clear quality photos.

I got it on Amazon along with a 18-55mm lens AND a 55-200mm lens, plus a Nikon camera bag for only about $800, which is something I couldn't find anywhere else.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

I recommend anything in the Canon Rebel series! I learned on my Rebel XT and it served me well. Also, this lens: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-50mm-1-8-Camera-Lens/dp/B00007E7JU the price is unbeatable

I have recently updated mine last Christmas since I want to get into photography and it would help with my blog and new jewelry business! I did research because I have a small nikon but my father loves canon since he was my age and I found that canons and nikons are both good of course each one has its pros and cons. Many say that Nikon has the better lens. But I ended up with the Canon Rebel T3 because I learned that you can get an adaptor so you can put a nikon lens on canons however you cannot put a canon lens on a nikon camera. Also the Canon Rebel T3 is great to learn about photography on.

I'm completely obsessed with my Canon EOS 40d... it's a great camera, takes GREAT shots, isn't too heavy and is still digital. Love, love, love it. Definitely worth spending the money on it. Good luck! xoxo

This post couldn't come at a more perfect moment as I'm on the hunt for a beginner DSLR right now as well! I'm leaning towards the Canon Rebel. Good luck with your decision!

I don't happen to have recommendations for a camera, but I have to ask what brand is that dress?!

Anonymous said...

I don't know about cameras but the dress is J Crew from last fall. I have the same one and love it!

I have a nikon D5100 and am totally and completely in love. It makes even not so good pictures turn out great (candids and group shots that would be ugly on a smaller camera still make everyone happy!)

I love love love the dress in the photo where is it from?

I really loved the Canon Rebel, but we went with the Nikon, and I am really glad that we did. It is soooooo much easier to use than the Canon, and the images are unbelievable!

Hey Mackenzie! I just recently started shooting with a DSLR (about half a year) to improve our blog images as well and I think you definitely won't regret an upgrade. The difference is night and day. I went to a photography class taught by my wedding photographer and she recommends getting the cheapest camera body you can get and spending your money on lenses. There isn't a huge difference between Nikon and Canon, just depends on your preference. I use a Canon Rebel (can't even remember the number but it was the cheapest version) and shoot almost all the time with the 50 mm 1.8 f lens that is most recommended lens for beginners. You can take some ridiculously good shots with it. They have a similar 50 mm 1.8 lens for Nikon as well, so you can still purchase even if you go with Nikon. Just so you can see a difference in our blog pictures from half a year ago to now, go to this post http://www.twodelighted.com/2011/11/13/just-a-little-hocus-pocus/ versus this post http://www.twodelighted.com/2012/06/11/my-kitchen-before-and-after/ with pictures of the same kitchen.
