WHAT ARE YOU READING?

{Gwyneth Paltrow in Vogue}

Several of the tasks on my 101 in 1001 list relate to reading. I read all the Harry Potter books (#21) because, you know, how could you not? Now I'm in the process of reading every Jane Austen novel (#60), which I like to space out with a couple months between each one. But then there's just general reading I'd like to make time for (#69): twenty new books, of which I can say I've crossed off only eight. I imagine that won't sound particularly ambitious to some of you and yet I know if it were easier I'd have crossed it off the list a long time ago! ;) Do you make time to read for fun? Any must-reads you'd recommend to help me cross #69 off my list?

I just read a really interesting book called "Tempted" by Megan Hart -- I loved the 50 Shades Trilogy and saw in a magazine that Megan Hart's books were really great and similar to 50 Shades... "Tempted" was a quick read and very sassy plot!

I just read "My Name is Memory" by Ann Brashares and loved it - "On the Island" was also a favorite this summer!

I'm so behind the times but I just finished The Hunger Games trilogy - and then reread it, and reread it. I'm reading The Happiness Project now, it's okay although not as great as I'd expected. I haven't read The Help yet, so I plan on reading that as well.

I have the same goal about reading Jane Austen - I've read 4 but I have to space them out or they all run together for me.

Just finished reading 'Mrs. Robinson's Disgrace' and loved it. A true story about a married woman in Victorian England who engages in an affair, records her adultery in her journal and gets caught by her jerky husband (who it turns out had been having his own affairs). Once again I was reminded how unfairly women have been treated through the ages, how we were basic possessions of our fathers and husbands, how sad and lonely a woman's life could be regardless of her wealth or social status. We forget just how far we've come!

I'm a little behind on my reading goal; so I'm excited to see what books people recommend. I've got a few for you. "Gone Girl" if you want a page turner; "Rules of Civility" for a fun 20's novel, "Invisible Bridge" is a beautifully written story about WWII, and "Love in a Cold Climate" or any other Nancy Mitford book.

Don't judge me, but I've been all about teen dystopian novels this summer. Flew threw the Divergent series, Delirium series, and Maze Runner series. Also loved Before I Fall, from the same author of the Delirium series.

Oh, I love seeing what everyone else is reading. I volunteered at our local library for awhile before working full time and miss seeing all the books come in on hold for patrons - it certainly kept me in the loop on what was popular.

This past year I've loved: Still Alice, Ahab's Wife, Room, anything by Ann Patchett, Philip Roth and John Irving.

If you enjoyed Harry Potter, you may like George RR Martin's "Game Of Thrones" series - it has been made into a HBO series that is simply divine.

I read a lot! I just finished House at Riverton, which was really good. Everyone has been reading Gone Girl this summer, also a good summer read.

I've been trying to get better at reading the classics, which hasn't happened yet this summer. Trying to get myself motivated for that this fall!

The Marriage Plot was a little slow getting started but now I'm loving it! It's a commitment though! If you like British people and mysteries- not scary ones- i love the flavia de luce novels. so much fun.

Also if you haven't read the hunger games jump on the bandwagon. It's worth it!

I read nonstop. I would shrivel up and die inside if I couldn't read. I have read so many books that I forget what I have read - seriously, I have gotten 1/3 of the way through some books only to realize that I have already read them before. Primarily the classics, biographies, and historical fiction with a some science fiction thrown in here and there. I shared my most recent list here:

And I agree with Natalie: Love in the Time of Cholera is one of my absolute favorites along with anything by Robertson Davies.

Definitely "Something Borrowed" by Emily Giffin. The movie is amazing, but the book is even better! And Emily writes a ton of other books that are just as good!

Last two I read were Where We Belong and Gone Girl - both very good! I just started The Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter--And How to Make the Most of Them Now. It's different then what I usually read but I'm enjoying it so far!

Some of my all time favorite reads include:

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver (cried during parts)

Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl (don't worry, it's not about physics. I literally couldn't put it down.)

A Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing by Melissa Bank (also, not about hunting or fishing)

South of Broad by Pat Conroy

If you like biographies and Jackie Kennedy, read "Mrs. Kennedy and Me" by Clint Hill. Clint Hill was her secret service agent during JFK's presidency and this memoir is the first thing he's written on the subject ever! It is so charming and heartbreaking at the same time. I read it in a day!

I loved:
I Was Told There'd be Cake by Sloane Crosley
I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron
Bossypants by Tina Fey
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling

They are all easy, upbeat reads.

The Hunger Games trilogy is pretty addictive as well.

Good luck!

This may be lame but I'm actually really into the Pretty Little Liars series. Everyone talks about the show so I wanted to read the books to see what it was all about. Super easy, quick, and fun reads!

This summer I've been reading Eric Larsen and Susan Vreeland. Both authors do extensive historical research and then fill in the blanks with very probable character stories. Vreeland: Clara and Mr. Tiffany - about Clara Driscoll and the 'Tiffany Girls' in Victorian NY - so charming! The Girl in Hyacynth Blue - recounts the owners lives as touched by owning a Vermeer painting. Luncheon of the Boating Party -tells about the Lives of the models in Renoir's iconic painting of the same name. Larsen: The Devil in the White City - a serial murder at the Chicago World's Fair. Overshadowed as the world was riveted on Jack the Ripper! In the Garden of the Beasts-the rise of Nazi Germany through the experiences of the family of the US embassador to Germany at that time. I plan to continue reading other titles from these authors as they have been great summer reads!

My mom read Gone Girl this summer and loved it. The Year of the Gadfly was good - about a secret society at a boarding school. I just finished Jack Kerouac's On the Road, and I'm dying to read Seating Arrangements next!
