A Little Leopard

These two spaces featured in Elle Decor have me jonesing to reupholster a little occasional chair with a splash of leopard print. Place it on a neutral rug, add a big abstract painting, and you're good to go!

P.S. Happy birthday, Dad! I love you so much.

Pour L'Artiste

The Glamourai described these inspiration photos for her apartment redo as "one part inspirational office space and several parts exotic opium den." While that's never how I would describe my own style, there is something delightfully off-kilter about this interior. A tribal rug, vintage leather chair, brassy lamp with a red shade, aqua bolster, and unhung art never looked so harmonious together, don't you agree?

Crunch Time!

A little glimpse at my weekly to do list...

1. A ten-page paper about the theme of betrayal in 17th century French theater. Yikes.

2. A quick presentation about the failure of FEMA to respond to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

3. An eight-page paper about non-traditional family structures and sex trafficking around the world.

4. A "Meet The Designer" piece for Rue.

5. A "Rue Shops [insert surprise city here]" piece.

6. A home tour piece for Rue.

7. Another home tour piece for Rue.

8. Book my flight to San Francisco.

9. Send out emails for a super fun, top secret project for Roxy's forthcoming Society Social furniture line.

10. Throw something together for Dad's birthday (tomorrow), my brother's birthday (Friday), and Mother's Day (Sunday).

What's keeping you busy this week? Deep breaths.

New arrivals at Loren Hope!!!

My favorite jewelry designer just released her summer collection and, let me just tell you, I. Am. Obsessed.  You know when you see something you must have and get all giddy inside? That just happened... about ten times.
{Well somebody just skyrocketed to the top of my wishlist. How pretty is she?! Dabney bib necklace, $175.}

{I mean, hello. Gold + bling + pink jade = perfection. Layer it with other gold pieces or let it shine on its own. Chloe necklace, $115.}
{Just look at all that tassle-y goodness! Your plain white t-shirt will never look the same. Need. Farrah necklace, $185.}

{You'll never need to buy another necklace again. Statement-making, totally unique, and just a little bit edgy... What more could you ask for? Cleopatra necklace, $90.}
Okay, now this is brilliant. You can buy a plain clasp necklace for $45 and then attach and switch out pendants separately! Lately I've been rocking this one:
{And I swear it transforms every outfit! Deco pendant, $45.}
{I also own this pretty sparkler (can you tell I'm a little obsessed?) and throw it on whenever I feel like my outfit is missing that special something. It hasn't failed me yet! Sophie bib necklace, $75.}

I could rave about Loren Hope all day, every day. It's fantastic to have sponsors whose work I truly love and covet for myself. I hope you'll enjoy her baubles as much as I do!

Sabrina Linn

I had blogged about the second row right image before and was delighted to stumbled upon more of this Sabrina Linn-designed penthouse. Isn't it stunning?
{I love the neutral scheme of this living area. The combination of orange velvet and white upholstery is unexpectedly chic, but it's the large abstract art that steals the show.}
{How opulent is this workspace? I can only imagine looking out onto that kind of view in between blog posts!}
{A round mirror is an unexpected alternative over the bathroom sink. I adore the oversized idea board in what looks to be the foyer, proving that inspiration is indeed everywhere!}

P.S. Luxury Monograms giveaway happening here!

$75 Luxury Monograms Giveaway!

I am inspired to share my friend Melanie's new business venture, Luxury Monograms. Frustrated by the lack of personalized fashion for the home, Melanie started her own business selling monogrammed pillows, placemats, napkins, and bags.
In addition to feeling inspired by Melanie's entrepreneurial example, what I love about Luxury Monograms is that you pick the pattern, the monogram (choosing from 12 styles), and the thread color (choosing from 24 colors). Ultimate creative control? I'm in!

Melanie recently teamed up with my friend Ashlina from The Decorista to style her photo shoot. I think the results are pretty fantastic, don't you?

I love the playful, preppy vibe of her products. Why not let orange Greek key, hot pink chevron, or purple suzani set the tone for your next soirée?

Melanie is graciously extending a $75 gift card to one Design Darling reader. To enter, please follow Design Darling, like Luxury Monograms on Facebook, and leave a comment letting me know one of your favorite items from her shop.

I'll be drawing the winner at random on Friday morning. Thank you to Melanie and good luck to all of you!

Happy Birthday.

Happy 22nd birthday to my boyfriend Michael.

{Still my favorite picture. London, March 2010.}

I know you don't make as many Design Darling cameos as you might like but I figured today we could make an exception. Thank you for being such a happy part of my four years at Bucknell. Whether we're dressed up as 1920s gangsters for Halloween or ATVing in the Greek islands during our semester abroad, I've had the time of my life. You are funny and quirky and wonderful and I love you. Happy happy birthday!

Thank You.

Thank you all for your kind words on my big announcement yesterday. You have me feeling more confident than ever that I'm making the right choice in moving to San Francisco.
This weekend I'll be spending time with a dear friend who's in town after her semester abroad and celebrating the 22nd birthday of a very special someone. I hope you all have a fantastic weekend — you deserve it!

A Leap of Faith {or} I'm Headed to San Francisco!

Several of you have inquired about my post-graduate plans. The honest truth is that, up until yesterday, I had no idea. I applied to a few design jobs in New York. I lined up a few interviews. I got a few rejections. I still have a few irons in the fire — but I've decided to table those options for now.
A few months ago, Crystal mentioned that she would love to have me intern for Rue Magazine in San Francisco for the summer. (I intern for her now, but everything I do is via my laptop.) I appreciated the offer and assumed it would make an excellent back-up plan to my other prospects.
I had this notion, like so many soon-to-be graduates, that being successful would mean landing a job with one of my dream companies, making enough money to pay New York rent, and having the stability that a full-time job entails. But I had this increasingly nagging feeling that taking a position in New York would mean passing up a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Working for Rue will not be the most lucrative or stable job I could take. Moving across the country, to a city I visited for just three days at age 15, is unsettling. And the fact that there's no way to predict what will happen after Rue's one-year anniversary issue in September reminds me just how big a risk I'm taking.
And yet I know I would never forgive myself if I didn't take Crystal up on her offer. Words cannot describe how much I have loved writing and interning for Rue — and the opportunity to experience the day-to-day operations of an online magazine excites me more than any corporate job could.
As my parents have reminded me time and again, New York is forever. All my family lives on the east coast, and New York will forever feel like the city in my backyard. But the opportunity to fly to California, live in a new city for three and a half months, and work alongside two inspiring female entrepreneurs is right now. When I redefine success as lifelong learning and personal enrichment, I don't have to think twice about knowing which path is right for me.
From early June through mid-September, I will be living in Crystal's beautiful new apartment and spending my days writing, coordinating photo shoots, planning launch events, making new friends, eating good food, and exploring a new-to-me city. To me, it sounds like heaven on earth.
My life to this point has followed a very average timeline: high school, college, study abroad, intern over the summer. Spending the summer with Rue in San Francisco is easily the biggest decision I have made to date — and I am grateful for the newfound knowledge that it's the best one I could possibly make right now.
I am incredibly thankful to Crystal and Anne for extending this opportunity and to my parents for encouraging me to scratch all my type-A planning and do something totally outside the box. I am grateful to all of you who show up here each day to read and comment and encourage, and I cannot wait to share this adventure with you all.

In The Red

Red has never been one of my favorite colors but I'm loving the strong statement it makes in these three very different spaces.
How fun is the striped floor at this hotel bar? White furniture and simple throw pillows keep it from looking too over-the-top.
Modern chairs are a happy complement to a large framed photograph in classic black and white. I swear I will never tire of herringbone floors!
I love the playful use of pink-red in this more traditional space. Velvet upholstered stools and a glossy white ceiling keep my interest piqued.
