101 IN 1001 UPDATE!

I was happy to see on last week's feedback post that one of your favorite features is an occasional update on my 101 in 1001 list. (If you're new here, I'm keeping a list of 101 things I'd like to do in 1001 days!) I am more than happy to oblige — I love having a list of goals (some personal, some professional, some just for fun!) and constantly refer to it when I feel like I'm in a rut.

If I hang out with a friend who's feeling a little down personally or professionally, writing a 101 in 1001 list is always the first thing I suggest. Whenever I'm not feeling like my usual self, I look at my list and decide which goals I should try to cross off next. The mix of silly tasks and big dreams really helps me take advantage of my free time and focus on the right goals for work. As of my last update in May, I had crossed off 13 goals; since then, I've crossed off seven more for a grand total of 20. Here's what I've been up to:

32. Hire interns.
Taryn started in May and has been a huge help managing inventory on the website, placing new wholesale orders, and tackling other projects as they come up. Mary Claire just joined us this week and will be working on zhushing up the product descriptions on the site among other things! Both of them are a dream to work with and have totally reinvigorated my excitement about taking Design Darling to the next level!

42. See a TED Talk live.
I went to the TEDx Times Square event in May! I got to hear Deepak Chopra speak and met a ton of cool people between talks. You can register for their next event here!

59. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge.
Finally did this with Grayson, Will, and our friends Jane and Scottie after my housewarming brunch in May! Highly recommend whether you're visiting or you've lived here for years.

73. Rent Vespas on Nantucket.
Easily the most fun thing I've crossed off so far! I was terrified at first but eventually got the hang of it and it was SUCH a fun way to see the island. So grateful for my adventurous friends!

91. Play mini golf.
Did this in Austin! I beat Will (mwahaha) and got a hole-in-one. Making my dad proud!

92. Go to an amusement park.
We were stuck in traffic on our way home from a wedding in Pennsylvania and spontaneously veered off toward Six Flags. Hilarious photo evidence here.

93. Learn to open a bottle of champagne.
I'm slowly trying to come around to wine (it's just never been my favorite!) so I'm easing into it with champagne, prosecco, and rosé. Jane taught me how to open a bottle at my brunch!

P.S. If you decide to write your own 101 in 1001 list, tweet me and I'll add the link at the bottom of my list!

WHERE TO EAT ON NANTUCKET

First of all, a huge THANK YOU for your comments on yesterday's post. Every single comment (and email!) was super helpful to me in shaping the content on Design Darling in the months and years to come. Now back to the posts you requested most!

One of the most frequent questions I'm asked every summer is what to do and where to eat on Nantucket. I've been to the island every summer since I was born and I love bringing new friends there for the first time. Both my parents and my grandmother have homes there so I'm lucky to have lots of reasons to visit throughout the year. I've posted about Nantucket probably a million times (here, here, here, and here for starters!) but here are a few pictures from my most recent weekend trip as well as a list of some of my favorite restaurants on the island.

Guacamole, fish tacos, and margaritas in a more quiet part of the island. Bonus points: you might get my brother Grayson as a waiter! ;)

Best for cocktails at sunset but often closed for wedding receptions so be sure to call ahead! Also a perfect brunch spot if you bring sunscreen. Eating a lobster roll with your toes in the sand? Heaven on earth.

Other favorite spots:
- The outdoor patio at The Brotherhood (two words: curly fries)
- Brunch at Black Eyed Susan's
- Ice cream cones at The Juice Bar (I dream about their homemade cookie dough...)
- The deck at Queequeg's (perfect spot to share a bottle of rosé pre-Juice Bar #healthyhabits)
- 'Sconset Market (we used to sneak out of church early to pick up their famous blueberry muffins!)

Have you been to Nantucket? What places would you add to the list? I could use a few new recommendations for our next trip in July!

WOULD LOVE YOUR FEEDBACK!

*photo from an awesome new-to-me blog, Paige Arminta

For almost five years now, Design Darling has been my digital happy place — a reason to share my favorite people, places, and things with a community of (mostly) women who have similar interests and taste. This little sliver of the internet has grown up with me: I've shared everything from my study abroad semester at 20 and moving to San Francisco at 21 to launching my online store at 22, weathering a tough break-up at 23, and sharing my first New York apartment at 24.

Along the way I've gotten more comfortable sharing glimpses of my personal styleprofessional milestones, and goals I've tackled as part of my 101 in 1001 list. I've also struggled with where to draw the line on sharing pieces of my personal life... Travel pictures, yes; dating advice, no. I've consistently tried to make this blog a home for the kind of content I want to read, particularly with the recent additions of career spotlights on some of my favorite women in business and shopping finds under $100.

In my continual quest for self-improvement, I'd love to hear your feedback on what you like, what you want more of, and what you could do without. This blog would be nothing without the awesome people who read it and I want to make Design Darling better for all of you. (Especially as I get ready to launch my site redesign — more on that soon!) I'm often surprised by which posts perform best (in terms of comments, social engagement, traffic from Pinterest, etc.) and I'd be lying if I said I don't get discouraged when a career spotlight, DIY project, or more personal post don't seem to resonate the way I thought they would.

So please don't be afraid to speak up and let me know: what's your favorite feature? anything from the past you wish I'd bring back? any features you skip over? something you've seen elsewhere that you'd like to see a Design Darling spin on? what makes you come to this blog day in and day out? what would make you check in more often? what do you wish I'd do differently? Please keep it constructive but don't be afraid to be honest with me. I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say!

OUTFIT {STRIPES IN 'SCONSET}

This Old Navy maxi dress was the perfect choice for a stroll around 'Sconset last weekend. Between the gorgeous homes, manicured lawns, and ocean views, 'Sconset is my absolute favorite spot in Nantucket and always a favorite place to bring first time visitors. My mom grew up spending summers in a house on Baxter Road and it's fun to retrace her old stomping grounds. I've yet to bring a friend who didn't immediately fall in love!

Remember this Kate Spade tote? It's the perfect size for two beach towels and a bottle of sunscreen. Sadly it was too cold to spend all day on the beach but it was nice to dip our toes in the Atlantic after the longest winter ever. Just another reason to get back to the island in July... :)

I've worn this monogrammed necklace every day since it arrived... I love the idea of a personalized piece for everyday wear that also layers well with more statement-making pieces. (See also: this monogrammed cuff.)

A girl can never own too many Jack Rogers. I've long since lost count of how many pairs I've worn into the ground over the years but I can safely say there's no more sound investment for your summer wardrobe.

Isn't the tulip hem pretty? I picked up a couple other Old Navy goodies for summer and intend to spend the summer in their easy breezy everyday dresses. Paired with chic tortoiseshell sunnies and classic gold Jacks, you really can't go wrong.

SUMMER TREND: TASSELS

One of my favorite summer trends is tassels on accessories, clothing, and decor. I'm obsessed! Tassels aren't so much "trendy" as they is a resurgence of a classic motif... which means you can invest in a few pieces knowing they won't be out of style next season. Here are a few of my favorite tassels at the moment:

one  //  two  //  three  //  four  //  five  //  six  //  seven  //  eight
nine  //  ten  //  eleven  //  twelve  //  thirteen  //  fourteen  //  fifteen

I truly can't get enough: I'm loving tassel earrings, this neutral tassel chandelier (budget-friendly version here), these tassel curtains (I have the shower version), a pair of classic tassel loafers, this Tory Burch tassel handbag... The list goes on. Have you purchased any tassels yet? What other summer trends are you loving?

WEEKEND WARDROBE

top  //  earrings  //  sunglasses  //  skirt  //  bow bracelet  //  bow flats  //  bag

Do you ever feel like the best part of travel is coming home? This will be my first weekend in New York since early May and I'm pretty happy about it. I have a little picnic planned for tonight (I'll try to Instagram!) and brunch with blogger friends on Sunday but other than that the weekend is a blank canvas. Sometimes those are the best kinds, don't you think? I hope you all have a good one! xx

THE ULTIMATE SUMMER WARDROBE

Does anyone create a seasonal wishlist? I'm thinking it's not a bad idea. I've referred back to my ultimate spring wardrobe post a million times as I contemplated various purchases over the past few months. So here's what I'm coveting for the summer months: blue and white (if it ain't broke...), the most insanely flattering lace peplum top, the perfect espadrilles, and more...

one  //  two  //  three  //  four  //  five  //  six  //  seven  //  eight
nine  //  ten  //  eleven  //  twelve  //  thirteen  //  fourteen  //  fifteen

I can't even handle the back of this dress or the cut of this swimsuit. I really concentrated on pieces I'd rewear summer after summer — you can't go wrong with a blue oxford shirt or navy bow espadrilles! What would your ultimate summer wardrobe look like? Will you be scooping up any of these pieces over the next few months?

CAREER SPOTLIGHT: DIETICIAN AND RESTAURATEUR MARISSA LIPPERT

One of my favorite things about moving to the West Village has been exploring all the boutiques, coffee shops, and restaurants in my new neighborhood. There's a totally different energy down here and I can't get enough! One of my best discoveries has been Nourish Kitchen + Table, a tiny café that's open all day and has become a go-to for coffee meetings and takeout for lunch and/or dinner. The space is gorgeous and the menu makes it easy to eat healthy without spending a ton. I was pretty thrilled when I connected the dots and realized that the owner is Marissa Lippert, who used to write a food column for Rue Magazine when I interned there after college. (Isn't it funny how things come full circle?!) Knowing little about the restaurant business and curious to hear about her career path, I asked if she'd be willing to sit down and answer a few questions about how she got started, what's inspiring her, and what's next for my favorite healthy takeout spot in my new 'hood. She kindly agreed to an interview and instantly impressed me with her business savvy and personal style. Say hello to Marissa!

Name: Marissa Lippert
Title: Nutritionist and owner, Nourish Kitchen & Table
Location: West Village, New York City

What was your first job ever? Have you always wanted to open a restaurant?
My first job ever was at the Gap — maybe there’s some link to retail there. I’ve always loved tactile magazines and newspapers, the food section and the coupon section. I would sit on my mom’s floor and flip through all the photos of food. I’m interested in the intersection between fashion and food. I don’t know that I’ve always wanted to open a restaurant but I’m definitely a visual person so the idea of a lifestyle brand combining food and retail made sense to me.

What did you do prior to opening Nourish?
After college, I worked in fashion as an assistant buyer at Saks. I really wanted to figure out a way to tie in fashion, food, and health; I just wasn’t sure how I was going to do it. Then I started a nutrition practice which I’ve been doing for the past nine years.

What were some of the steps that went into opening this space?
It took me a year and a half to find the space. I knew I wanted to be in this neighborhood on my old running loop. I got to know the West Village really well and could sense the energy of a single block — that can really impact the potential success of any store concept. It took me a while to finance it since I’m the only partner. But I always knew what I wanted the food to be so we developed the menu before opening and went back and tweaked it with customer input.

What does a typical day look like for you?
The days are crazy right now. I attempt to work out a couple mornings a week, either running or doing yoga. If we have a big catering order, I’m here early and I stay late. I might be meeting with a new purveyor or planning out an event for the following week. Otherwise I’m working on a new recipe or a menu change with our head chef, running to the flower market, or curating recipes for our meal service. Really the whole Nourish experience is to help people who can’t cook or who don’t have the time or space to cook experience the enjoyment of eating great food on real plates, both within our space and outside of it.

What are a few of your favorite dishes right now?
Our kale salad — we could never take that off the menu. We have a new Madagascar pink rice that’s really pretty and flavorful. We tend to take a lot of inspiration from the Mediterranean and the Middle East — there’s a global influence with seasonal ingredients.

You’re also a nutritionist. What’s one thing we should all be eating more of?
We could all do a better job on vegetables. When I started conceiving of Nourish, I had years of market research from my own clients. People wanted to know how to make salads interesting — they’re so good for your health, skin, and weight management. I’m a big proponent that 50% of what you put in your mouth every day should be fruits or vegetables. If you break it down meal by meal, it’s really easy and you immediately feel the impact — your clothes fit better and your skin instantly feels more dewey.

And what’s one thing we should all cut out of our diets?
One thing to leave out is artificial sweetener. We don’t really know the impact yet and the word “artificial” should definitely raise eyebrows. The chemical breakdown of one Splenda is 600 times sweeter than a pack of sugar, which changes your tastebuds. People who use a lot of Splenda will bite into a juicy peach and won’t taste it as much. Their body is no longer satisfied by natural foods, which makes them more prone to gaining weight.

Oh boy... I am so guilty of putting Splenda in my iced coffee every morning. How can I kick the habit?
I use a packet of real sugar and some of our homemade almond milk. For iced coffee, I use a little bit of simple syrup. With good quality coffee and local milk, you don’t need as much sweetener.

I need to start coming here for my morning coffee! What’s the most fun part of your job?
Interacting with our customers and seeing people really use the space as it was intended: to be nourished. I’m very, very grateful that we get really positive feedback from our regulars as well as new customers in the neighborhood — we’re serving a purpose in their lives. The most fun thing for me is the energy that our team and the space give off.

And the least fun?
Not sleeping enough. It’s a long day and a hard business, but I wouldn’t think of doing anything else.

That’s a great feeling. How do you stay organized?
Nourish's brand director Allegra, who knows when to crack the whip. I’m old school — I keep a physical planner and a lot of little Moleskin notebooks for new recipes and magazine tears.

What are your next few goals for the business?
Other locations are certainly a possibility. I never had a longterm plan or vision — we’re still letting our day-to-day traffic and customer response guide us. I would love a commissary space for catering. And I’d love to collaborate with a larger brand on a juice bar or breakfast and lunch spot, like Toby’s Coffee in Club Monaco. That would be super interesting to me.

What’s one pinch me moment you’ve had so far?
Last summer, I was in a meeting at this exact table and not really paying attention when one of our employees tapped me on the shoulder. Martha Stewart had just walked in to have lunch!

What’s your advice for someone who wants to go into the restaurant business?
Do a lot of research. Keep pushing yourself. Have faith in your concept and your idea. Take breaks. You can’t be productive if you’re running on empty.

When will you know you’ve made it?
I don’t think you ever do. When you’re a driven, passionate business person, you’re always thinking of the next big or small thing.

Keep up with Nourish:

SUMMER BUYS FOR YOUR BOYFRIEND

Will and I just celebrated our six month anniversary! We did dinner and drinks at the Comedy Cellar last week and I already can't wait to go back. It's the perfect date night but it'd be equally fun to do with a group of girlfriends. Between our anniversary and his birthday earlier in the month, I've been on the lookout for great guy gifts and ways to spruce up his summer wardrobe. I've always loved his style (I'd call it preppy with a Southern twist) and we're both drawn to classic pieces like gingham shirts, dark wash denim, and leather driving mocs. He has to wear business formal for work so it's nice for him to dress a little more casually on the weekends.

When we first started dating, I helped him pick out a pair of jeans at Rag & Bone in the West Village (you already know they make my favorite women's skinnies!). I much prefer shopping online to shopping in person so now that we know which styles and sizes suit him best, we can both add to his collection over time with the click of a button. I shop Nordstrom all the time for myself (party dresses, my favorite candle, etc.) and it's nice to scoop up a piece or two for Will every now and then! (Is gift giving part of anyone else's love language? That could be a post in and of itself...) Here's what I'm loving for guys right now:

one  //  two  //  three  //  four  //  five  //  six  //  seven  //  eight
nine  //  ten  //  eleven  //  twelve  //  thirteen  //  fourteen  //  fifteen  //  sixteen

Nordstrom carries so many of my favorite men's brands in one place... Brooks Brothers, Jack Spade, Polo, Rag & Bone, and more. It's perfect for anniversaries, birthdays, Father's Day, or "just because" presents. (P.S. This is the pair of jeans Will got six months ago... And they're on sale!)

WEEKEND WARDROBE

top  //  scarf  //  shorts  //  bag  //  shoes

It's here, it's here, it's finally here! The first of many summer trips to Nantucket is this weekend and I could NOT be more excited. Will and my friend Jane have never been so it will be extra fun to show them around the island (and it's always a treat to have Amy along — remember these gorgeous photos?). Grayson, his friend, and my cousin Sarah are up there working at Millie's again so we'll have a full house! I'm so looking forward to blueberry muffins from the 'Sconset Market, iced coffee on the beach, and a stack of unread books and magazines. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend as well! xx

P.S. I've been living in this top lately and it's 25% off with code SUMMERTIME!

MARK & GRAHAM MONOGRAMMED MELAMINE

Holy monogrammed goodness... These new melamine serving pieces just stole my summer-loving heart. Pick up the anchor platter ($44) for a nautical hostess gift or a set of six monogrammed plates ($34 each) for your next dinner party. Or go off the registry and give a set as a wedding gift with the couple's new monogram... The options are endless and the range of colors and monogramming options can't be beat.

WHICH COLOR SCHEME ARE YOU?

When it comes to decorating my apartment, I truthfully haven't made much progress in the past couple months. I have my neutral foundation pieces (mirror, sofa, dining table) and I still need to make a list of pieces I need to fill in the gaps... New chairs for sure. A tablecloth (on the way!). A headboard or an oversized art piece for above the bed. I'd love to know what home improvement projects you're tackling and what colors you're most drawn to. Which of these color schemes is closest to your aesthetic: neutral, nautical, or brights?!
