For almost five years now, Design Darling has been my digital happy place — a reason to share my favorite people, places, and things with a community of (mostly) women who have similar interests and taste. This little sliver of the internet has grown up with me: I've shared everything from my study abroad semester at 20 and moving to San Francisco at 21 to launching my online store at 22, weathering a tough break-up at 23, and sharing my first New York apartment at 24.
Along the way I've gotten more comfortable sharing glimpses of my personal style, professional milestones, and goals I've tackled as part of my 101 in 1001 list. I've also struggled with where to draw the line on sharing pieces of my personal life... Travel pictures, yes; dating advice, no. I've consistently tried to make this blog a home for the kind of content I want to read, particularly with the recent additions of career spotlights on some of my favorite women in business and shopping finds under $100.
In my continual quest for self-improvement, I'd love to hear your feedback on what you like, what you want more of, and what you could do without. This blog would be nothing without the awesome people who read it and I want to make Design Darling better for all of you. (Especially as I get ready to launch my site redesign — more on that soon!) I'm often surprised by which posts perform best (in terms of comments, social engagement, traffic from Pinterest, etc.) and I'd be lying if I said I don't get discouraged when a career spotlight, DIY project, or more personal post don't seem to resonate the way I thought they would.
So please don't be afraid to speak up and let me know: what's your favorite feature? anything from the past you wish I'd bring back? any features you skip over? something you've seen elsewhere that you'd like to see a Design Darling spin on? what makes you come to this blog day in and day out? what would make you check in more often? what do you wish I'd do differently? Long time follower (but on RSS feed so I rarely comment- Sorry!) I love pretty much everything you do. I love your NYC picks, career spotlights, weekend reading, interior design and your personal outfit posts. Like I said... pretty much everything :) The only thing I sometimes skip over are your "weekend wardrobe" posts they are a bit simple in appearance and your personal outfit posts are so much cuter! Keep on keeping on!

You'll never please everyone so just get that thought out of the way! For example, I am not a huge fan of the career spotlights, because I like the blog when it reflects what you like/dislike/realities of your day to day even when it's good or bad. As a mom to 5 kids, career spotlights don't really reflect where I am in life! But that doesn't make the career spotlights unworthy content. Blogs should be a reflection of the author in a whole way. Meaning it is an honest thoughtful place for that person to post things that relate to their life. I would say you do a great job of this, and if there is something that people don't particularly like, well thank goodness we have the freewill to just click on to the next blog we read!
I really enjoy your blog because I am a 23 year old girl living in NYC so I can frequently relate to your posts. I love that your blog has a healthy balance of different topics, very refreshing from what is out there today! I'd enjoy some more step by step posts of decorating your apartment, a little more insight into your thought process and design ideas?

I really like it when you have more affordable centered outfits as well, like an Old Navy dress, for example. More looks for less would be great! And , of course, I love your decor posts and the DIY projects.

Perhaps you could post more items that are more affordable items of those you're coveting?! Design Darling is one of my very favorite blogs! I especially feel like it's so relatable since I'm the same age, live in a city, have a similar personal style, etc (plus I have a 101 in 1001 list too!).
I love your outfit pictures and especially home design posts. Sometimes I feel like I would love to see slightly less pricey items (favorites under 50, 100, and 200 maybe instead of all being lumped together). I think you would also have great crave/save or splurge/steal posts! My last idea is "steal the look" posts where you pull together pieces to copy an outfit or a room.

I love your outfit posts and photos of your apartment because I love your style and it gives me inspiration! I always love travel photos as well, and like I mentioned in my comment yesterday, would love to see more about Nantucket- maybe a little mini travel guide for someone like me who doesn't know much about the area but would love to visit!
I think it's so important to remain genuine in your posts, and this seems like something you stay true to!

Regarding your blog's content. I like your career spotlight. Going forward, I'd like to see features on women that have more traditional office jobs (i.e., legal, accounting, marketing, etc). We're a fashionable, fun bunch too! Moreover, I'd like to see professional outfit posts. Maybe a "9-5 Fashion" post, or something along those lines. I know you do not work in a traditional office, but you have great style, and I am confident you could put together some stylish outfit inspirations.I'd also love to see outfit suggestions for special events (i.e., bachelorette parties, bridal showers, weddings, etc). This suggestion is a little selfish because I'm getting married soon :)
Ellie — Love the idea of a save/splurge feature and get the look posts for outfits and interiors. I did do one career spotlight based in Richmond, Virginia, but I'm definitely open to scheduling career features as I travel to new cities. Any suggestions of particular people or places you'd like to see?
Heather — I have a TON of posts about Nantucket coming up! Where to eat, what to do, and a tidbit about renting Vespas (which I couldn't recommend more highly!). I really love this blog! My friend Amy sent me the link about a year ago and I have been reading ever since. I'm 22 years old living in Chicago, just graduated from college, and moving into my first "big girl" apartment in 2 weeks. I have been benefiting from your apartment posts. Seeing that you were able to make the very most out of a tiny space made me less anxious about searching for and signing a lease for a studio in a neighborhood I loved versus a one bedroom somewhere else. I would love to see more apartment features! I also really loved the book shelf styling post. I will be utilizing that as I have a large room divider that will need some attention. I also really love the career spotlights and weekend reading, those links are like a little present that you get to open. I think you do a wonderful job!

Mackenzie, I've been reading for about two years and I love love love your posts and your boutique! My roommate bought me the acrylic tray for Christmas this year! Your 101 list inspired me to create my own. I really like the career spotlights, I like reading about how women just like myself are making a name for themselves running their own businesses because its something I would love to do one day. Sometimes that content stays on Instagram but it's definitely worth taking the time to reflect and share on here! It sounds like you're talking about affiliate links, which I use for retailers who pay me a small commission when my readers make a purchase after seeing an item they like on my blog. I always share the designer of each piece in my outfit posts but I'd be happy to add that information if I decide to continue my weekend wardrobe series. For the weekend reading links to articles, other blogs, videos, etc., you should be able to preview the link that's about to open. Thanks for your suggestions!

Hi Mackenzie! You are, without a doubt, my favorite blogger & I literally visit your page several times a day (even when I know there isn't a new post). I love the career spotlights, but I want to learn more about YOUR business. I work in a small boutique, and I'm learning so much about the market trips and the buying, and I'd love some perspective from your side of things. I'm sure the buying for Design Darling is different than the buying we do in our store (it's a high end fashion store called Sassy Boutique in Vero Beach, FL) and I just want the whole story on how you started the boutique, how you buy, and the whole nine yards! I think a twenty-something running her own small business (and looking chic doing it) is so cool, and I want more inspiration to start something of my own! :)

I love your blog. My favorite posts are those related to interior decorating and fashion, but especially interior decorating. I'd love to see more photos of how you designed your apartment (within your comfort zone, naturally) as well as some of your own personal outfits.
Like a few others, I'd love to see more affordable items. I like a lot of the brands you feature but I can't afford a lot of them at the moment. I'd like to see more things under $75 or even $50.
I like the career spotlights because it gives me a glimpse into career ideas.

One last thing, I check your blog in a regular format--no RSS feed or anything--but the widgets on your blog for giveaways never ever show up. I've seen some people write the same thing but I don't know how common it is for you or what the problem could be. I can see them all the time on other people's when they have contests or giveaways and am able to enter/log-in and do whatever tasks in order to participate. Sometimes other features for perusing items you discussed don't work and there's a busy symbol that keeps scrolling.

First of all THANK YOU, for seeking input from your readers on how to better your blog. I am very impressed by your self-awareness, need for honest feedback, and professionalism you exude at all times.
I've been reading your blog for about a year or so. At first I would only read it sometimes but it has quickly become a daily read.
What I love most about your blog is that you are a businesswoman first and a blogger second. Too many bloggers these days call blogging a full-time job and then complain about being busy/stressed/whatever. As a young working professional that is unrelatable to me. Your blog meanwhile, has remained fresh and relatable.
So, keep expanding your business. I would love to see some original Design Darling items (which I know are in the works!) and I am thankful that you have shared your career goals.
I have really enjoyed your career features. I would love to see some cooking posts- I know many of your readers also can relate to having small kitchens and a limited budget. Some more beauty posts would be nice too.
I know personal posts are tricky, and I think you have done an excellent job navigating that balance.
Your honest approach to blogging has slowly made you become one of my favorite bloggers.
One minor constructive point- I think collaborations with The College Prepster weaken your brand. Her brand and blog have rapidly gone downhill and her demographic has shifted from undergrads and grad students to pre-teens, which is not your target demographic.
I only read a few blogs religiously and yours is one! I really admire you being a business owner and blogger who still comes off very kind and relatable. As my business grows, it's motivation to keep blogging and running my business.
Also love the career spotlights -- even if I'm not interested in their career field, I love reading about women making their dreams a reality.
I like your style posts -- when you share the splurge and save items.

Well I've been reading for a LONG time, or so it seems. Your blog is still top on my Daily Reads list and is actually the first one I ready every day. It never ceases to bring laughter, inspiration, or motivation. I love how it has transformed from mainly fashion to interior decorating, design, and career focus. I love, love, love your career spotlights. As a rising senior in college, it is such an inspiration to see women who land jobs they want and how they did it. So keep that up in my opinion! Also, I think you should do more outfit/style posts and NYC places/guide (for my eventual trip). I like your shopping posts but I don't love them if I'm being honest. They're great but don't think they're very accessible to a lot of us readers. Overall, your blog is fantastic and cannot wait to see the redesign!

I’ve been a reader for about three years now and through many Google Reader/Bloglovin shuffles, Design Darling has remained one of my favorite read. As others have mentioned, I love that you share fun and relevant parts of your life while maintaining a sense of professionalism. It’s evident that you put a lot of thought and effort into creating quality content, which is something your readers really value.
Firstly, I’ll add my voice to the list of above commenters requested more budget-friendly versions of the gorgeous designer items you feature. I’ve bought a handful of “splurge” items after seeing them featured here, but your taste is so great that I wish I could afford them more frequently! I also really like the weekend links posts- it’s a fun list to click through when I have a few spare minutes on Friday afternoons.
Secondly, I’d love to hear more about your personal career trajectory. I was also a French major in college and have found myself in a job that I like but I’m not passionate about. Hearing about the challenges you’ve faced in building your brand, risks that have paid off and how you’ve culled relevant skills from your job experiences would be awesome!

Hi Mackenzie! As many readers have said thus far, you will never fully please everyone. I tend to head here more for your fashion/style posts than anything else; however I do also enjoy the interior design. As I live in Connecticut (just a few miles from Darien!) I often find myself in Manhattan and it's always fun to try out some of the places you've suggested. Perhaps you could add more than just restaurants- your go-to spas/salons, fun places to just hang out, etc. Places that only the true New Yorker discovers!
I'm also in Nantucket during the summer which leads me to my next suggestion- suggestions from YOU about more cool spots in Nantucket!

I just have to say that I am so impressed with you - and this post! I used to be a big fan of Carly's as well, but as another commenter mentioned, she just doesn't seem to have "grown up" - too often I read her posts and feel that she is out of touch (and even more often, I read her responses to readers and feel she lacks poise). I know you're good friends and could never ask you to distance yourself from her for the sake of your brand - I just want you to know that I definitely prefer your style and presentation of blogging to hers these days. I suppose I only want for you to continue growing as I can definitely relate to you now - as I once could relate to Carly - and I hope you don't get stuck in a rut with blogging, as it seems she has... but that you're asking for our feedback alone tells me that I'll continue to enjoy reading!

Hey Mackenzie. I really enjoy your blog and love that you keep things light-hearted. To echo what a few others have said:
- Definitely incorporate more affordable items. There are sooo many blogs where the author wears nothing but designer clothes, shoes and bags that they got for FREE. Their readers obviously aren't so lucky. What 20-something can afford the Valentino shoes that every blogger seems to show off? It doesn't have to be just Old Navy, there are other cute affordable brands too.
- More home decor! I think the affordable concept can be applied here too. Home decor can be expensive! How to find affordable decor could be great content. I loved the affordable rugs post you did awhile back. I'd also love to see you invite us into the decorating process rather than just showing the finished room. Maybe you can show the 5 lamps you considered before landing on the one you bought? Something like that.

- Post more often! I miss the two-a-days.
- I skip the career posts because I am a lawyer and already in my professional career but it seems like other readers love them. Obviously you can't please everyone all the time, so carry on!
- I also skip the NYC posts because I live in another city and don't ever plan to move to NYC. Maybe you can get input from friends or readers in other cities and feature great places elsewhere too. Even just one post a month with "5 great spots in X city" would be great for readers who live in or visit those cities too.
- I agree that I don't like clicking on a link when I don't know the manufacturer of the item. I get using an affiliate link, but maybe you can label the items like "Joie Sandals" rather than just linking to Shopbop with an affiliate link. Personally, I only click links for items I know I can afford. Not being able to see the designer stops me from clicking at all, where as I would have clicked on a cute item that I knew was in my price range. Just an idea.
Overall I think you are doing a great job!

You are a truly fabulous blogger, and have inspired me along with the inspiration of other blogs to start myself! I really enjoy the outfit posts as well as the weekend reading (finding new little niches of the internet is something I love). I tend to skip the career spotlights because the names are usually not too big, but that is probably just ignorance on my part. I agree with other comments asking for more design posts, I want to start getting into interior design but many other blogs/sites are overwhelming design with nothing else. I feel that design darling would really benefit from seeing more design posts because you have such a great eye! Keep up the amazing work and I'm so excited to see your redesign of the site!

I also really love the career features, but I would like to see a little more diversity - maybe some men or people of color. I get so much inspiration from them but I think seeing all types of people would ice the cake. I also really like your outfit posts, so more of those would be great! I like when you mix high and low so maybe more day to day outfits. I would love if you did like a round up of all the outfits you wear but don't post to the blog in a feature. Lastly, I think that more like style development - how you came to love navy so much or how to develop your own home style would be really helpful for me.

Hey Mackenzie! I agree with everyone above when I say I really enjoy your blog. It's clear to me that you work very hard to keep it authentic, and I love your style! I would definitely say that I am a huge fan of your outfit posts and all things design - I wish there was more! Your 101 in 1001 lists are so inspirational, and I feel like it really motivates me to get up and make things happen for myself.
One thing I would love is if your career spotlights focused on people outside of your industry. I know this would probably be a bit of a challenge since you obviously encounter fashion/design people much more than those in other fields. However, as a 24 year old medical student, I feel like there are tons of lawyers, businesspeople, and even grad students that could give a great interview. It would be nice to be able to hear from to someone who may not have a career in design or fashion but who loves it all the same - or even someone who just has a rockin' career! :)

I just moved into my first studio after years of living with roommates and I would love more posts on decorating apartments, especially on a budget. I love your shopping under $100 posts, especially for a recent college grad with a tight budget like mine. The everyday/weekend outfit posts are really inspirational too; they always make me want to step up my game and wear something nice! Currently I'm nannying two little girls this summer and it's really hard to not want to just throw on workout shorts everyday, and your posts really help me actually put on real clothes haha
Maybe you could do a post more about cute finds for cheaper too? Like $25-$50? I know you post stuff from Old Navy all the time (love that striped maxi!), which is one of my more frequent stores, so more stuff like that would be awesome.
i have been following your blog for years all the way from new zealand. i really love your blog, i honestly think you do an amazing job. i used to read a lot of different blogs but now being a working mother of two i have a lot less time so really i just have a handful that i read regularly. i think what really sets you apart is that you come across as really genuine. i am all for bloggers making an income from their blogs but sometimes it comes across as so forced when they try to incorporate endorsements, even if the opinions really are their own - this is not at all the case with you.
i do 80% of my shopping online now - clothing and homewares - but don't have that much time to wade through everything so i love it when you post great ideas - i almost rely on you and a few other bloggers to do the homework for me! through you i have found online stores like serena and lily and realized what a great selection shopbop has! i love it when there is a great sale on and you post your favorite finds!!
the career spotlights i really like but a lot of people in the design or fashion industry have blogs so it would be awesome to spotlight some other professions - lawyers, accountants, doctors, teachers etc. i love getting a sneak peek into the lives of people like this.
i like it when you mix high and low fashion as this is how i dress - splurge on some items, save on others.
one of my favorite things to follow along is the 101 in 1001 - such great ideas! so i love getting an update on your progress with this - perhaps you could update us more regularly? i think this is a good way for you to share personal anecdotes but not have to over share?
i like the posts around places to go in nyc - i would love even more of these! or even a guide for people visiting - what area to stay in, cool places to visit, what to skip etc. we travel to the states every year or two and i actually look on here and a cup of jo when deciding where to go when i visit a city - it is super handy and saves me having to spend hours on trip advisor.
i also like the weekend reading links! on a saturday morning i lie in bed and go through the links suggested on this blog, a cup of jo, and stipes & sequins. again, it's like you guys wade through everything for me.
so....basically i love that i have you + the 2 other blogs i read to do all the work for me so i can be lazy :)

In all honesty, I think you've got a great mix of topics on your blog, but I wanted to give you the number one reason I enjoy your blog so much:
Because you actually post on a regular basis! It's clear you take this seriously. As a blog follower, there is nothing more disappointing than when you land on someone's page, only to find out they still haven't posted again for the 189th day.
In my mind, it's like opening the newspaper(in your case, the style section!), only for it to be blank.
So thank you for taking the time and effort to do this on a regular basis. Obviously, life gets in the way sometimes, but I really love to see new posts from you!
And the Nantucket pics aren't hard to look at either! :)
I know I'm late but I still wanted to give you my feedback.
I love your blog and would love to see more outfit post since your style is really great.
The only post I tend to skip over are the NYC recommendations (because I live in Europe) and some of the career spotlights if the certain industry doesn't really appeal to me.
In general keep up the great work. I definetly like the light and airy layout and pictures you always have.

I absolutely love your blog and especially your new career section. I would like to see more career spotlights on women who are in the healthcare field or any science careers if you can. I find those really intriguing since we dont always get to hear from their perspectives.
And i also suggest to share some relationship advice too maybe here and there not often but I think thats apart of life and probably the most confusing part. And maybe articles about making friends in the city or how you stay in touch with some out of the city. It can be hard,
And finally I really love the restaurant picks. Im a BIG foodie. I would encourage you to try out other boroughs too. Great food all over nyc ! :) keep it up girl! Love love the blog
Personally, I appreciate the meaningful content (such as career spotlights) much more than, say, outfit posts. An occasional fashion-related post is fun, but won't keep me coming back like the meatier stuff. I made a 101 in 1001 list and would love more frequent updates on yours!
