MY APARTMENT TO DO LIST

My default thought process goes something like this: when in doubt, make a list. (Shocking, right?) Getting my apartment from where it is now to being ready to be shared on the blog feels a little daunting right now so I thought I'd break it down and share what I'm working on.

1. Buy/plant a cactus and a lemon tree
For whatever reason, I have been obsessed with cacti lately. And having a lemon tree in my apartment is part of my 101 in 1001 list!

2. Plant something for my window
My grandmother suggested a little herb garden. Any recommendations?

3. Chair and headboard from Katie Kime
I am so excited about these that I can hardly contain myself. It has been a dream of mine (no, seriously) to own one of Katie's designs and I became even more obsessed after touring her workspace on our trip to Austin. I'm so excited to invest in such high quality workmanship and I know these pieces will get a lot of love over the coming years. But it wouldn't be my apartment without a mix of high and low, which brings me to the next to do item...

4. Finishing touches from Target
I'm excited to be working with Target for some of the remaining decorating. You've already seen my green X benches but I'll give you a sneak peek of the striped duvet that's on its way... LOVE.

5. Order frames and mattes for Design Darling art prints
We're really ramping up the art selection in the boutique to make it a one-stop-shop for pretty prints for every room in your home.

5. Hang everything up!
Brace yourselves for a seriously epic gallery wall. I cannot wait!

What's on your to do list for your home? I'd love to compare notes!

A herb garden is one of the first things I did when I got my own place. I also have a modified Meyer Lemon (made for container growing) which hasn't quite been successful but it's still alive so fingers crossed!

Basil: I use this the most frequently, it likes sun and lots of water but be careful of water-logging it in cooler weather and bring it indoors below 50. I had to deal with gnats last winter due to overwatering and it wasn't fun. It also killed the plant :(

Rosemary: Rosemary likes drier soil and enjoys the cold so it's a great plant all around and very easy to take care of; probably the most low maintenance herbs I have. It gets a lot colder in NYC than in Texas so maybe bring it in once it starts to freeze.

Mint: Mint takes over the whole pot so it needs to have its own pot. It also likes a little shade so don't somewhere where it gets sun all the time. Water it as the soil dries out.

Those are the herbs I use most and each needs a different pot/container since they require different soil/watering conditions. Sorry this was a long comment but I hope it helps! -Megan

I feel like I'm in the exact same boat, with many of the same to-dos. We bought a fiddle fig tree which I absolutely love. The herb garden is a good idea. Plant the herbs you use most while cooking…and if you don't cook mint goes in a lot of cocktails ;)

Can't wait to see your gallery wall. I'm planning ours now! xx

I killed my cactus. It's supposed to be impossible for that to happen but I still managed!

I love my herb garden! I would suggest basil and chives, they have been pretty simple to keep alive :)

I feel like every apartment new or old needs some kind of plant to bring a little life into it! I love the idea of a cactus! Right now I've been really into orchids because they are beautiful and easy to take care of.

Can't wait to see the finished product!

Looking forward to seeing your apartment photos later! I'm personally trying to be more organized with my own space and using more decorative pieces. I've also been trying to get rid of things I don't use or use up excess bottles of lotion, shampoo, etc. It's a work in progress!

OMG There are so many things on my apartment to do list and I've been living there for 3 years! I have succulents and a cactus that have been doing well with occasional watering. I wanted a lemon tree too, but after a lot of research, I determined that New England wouldn't be warm enough year round or get enough sunlight :( If you're successful, please share!

Other things on my to do list include adding an area rug to the living room (I love the Lalita from Lulu and Georgia layered over Sisal or Jute), upgrading the sheets in my room, expanding my gallery wall and adding more fun objects and books to my Vitssjo shelves!

I can't wait to see what your place looks like!

Hi Mackenzie,

I must tell you I recently purchased the same duvet from Target for my bedroom renovation! I was planning on pairing it with the hot pink seahorse pillow (I emailed about it a few weeks ago, so thanks for the buyer info). I can't wait to see how you style yours!

Thanks for sharing!

getting it all together is such a task! i love all of katie's things but i can't afford any of them! i can't wait to see what patterns you pick! how close is your striped duvet going to your striped rug? i tried the same thing and it was too many stripes. (didn't know that was possible until then.) i have slowly been working on my room to make it actually look like i live there, apparently my place has never looked like anyone actually lives there due to my lack of stuff. this is the first time i have ever had more than one piece of art on the walls. i still need to build my desk, get new bedding (thinking crane and canopy), buy new plants since i killed mine, find a chair, get a few more prints for my gallery wall, and build a new coffee table. so many things, so little budget, so little time since my everygirl feature was supposed to happen months ago! (oops!)

I love that you are expanding your prints collection! I want to do a cool gallery wall in my new apartment too and I will appreciate having one site to go to to find all of the cute prints for it!

I'm a list-maker and have a million home projects in progress too. I need to hang a chandelier and some vintage platters, and I need some furniture reupholstered among other things.

I was so inspired by your list, I made one too! Thank you! Xo
