Happy {Unseasonably Warm} Weekend

It's winter in central Pennsylvania and there's still snow on the sidewalks — but today the temperature is topping off at a delightful 70 degrees. 70! In February! Instead of questioning this inexplicable miracle, I'm going to spend the afternoon enjoying the sunshine while it lasts. I hope you do the same and have a wonderful weekend!

The Well-Stocked Bar + No. 93

Did you all see Emily of Cupcakes & Cashmere's house tour the other day? I fell hard for this vignette with its styled bar and graphic art.
In related news, I think I need this perforated steel bar cart, new at Urban Outfitters. One tier for bottles and another for glasses — it's brilliant! No. 93 on my 101 in 1001 list is to find my signature cocktail. As a picky eater/drinker who doesn't care for wine or beer, this is easier said than done. Inspire me, readers! What's your alcoholic beverage of choice?

No. 79

It's hard to stay put in a Pennsylvania winter, particularly after spending last spring studying in France. My wanderlust is in full gear these days and I'm itching to take a trip to Montreal. In fact, it's no. 79 on my 101 in 1001 list. Have any of you been?

P.S. I have this camera and I adore it. It's responsible for all the pictures on my travel blog!

Good Things Come In Small Packages

Carly from College Prep has me hooked on the idea of trying on a few items from J.Crew's children's collection Crewcuts. Before you conjure up any images of grown women squeezing into kiddie clothes, know that the clothing sizes go up to girls' 14 and shoe sizes go up to women's 6 or 7 depending on the style! That's great news for those of us with tiny feet — and a tiny budget. Above are a few of the options I'm considering, particularly the desert boots which I'd pair with their lavender laces to make them a bit more feminine. Are you loving the bows and glitter as much as I am?

Two Guest Posts

Blog Swap {The College Prepster}

I love getting to know other bloggers (ahem, The Design Dialogues) and it's especially fun to learn they're my age and balancing blogging with life as a full-time college student. This was precisely the case with 21-year-old Carly of The College Prepster, the wildly popular blog of style advice for the well-clad collegiate. I was thrilled when she suggested that we swap blogs for a day and immediately decided to write about the essentials of the preppy young professional (a subject near and dear to my heart as I begin to think seriously about where I'd like to be next year). Well, great minds think alike, because Carly's post is all about her secrets of dressing for success! Enjoy!

Dress for success.

Yes, it’s cliché. But for good reason – it works.

I have a theory around the idea of power outfits. We all have them. That dress you slip into and feel like you’re in total control of everything or a pair of shoes that makes you stand two inches taller. Somewhere buried in each of our closets is this power outfit.

Doing a little research (okay, okay, stalking) on Mackenzie, I came to the conclusion that she is an extremely driven and successful 21-year-old. Being 21 myself, I am realizing more and more that real life is just around the corner. Internships and job interviews await us all.

Something I’ve been working on this semester is growing up my wardrobe. I want to express myself, my goals, my beliefs, my ambitions through how I dress. I want to walk into a room and have people know a little bit about me without having to utter a word – and for them to want to know more!
This is not something that can occur overnight… that much I know. Besides the inevitable financial investment, doing a major wardrobe overhaul needs to be carefully calculated and taken slow. Spending a ton of money in a super short period of time will only lead to one thing: a bunch of clothes that you probably will wear once or twice. I think the process is most effective if done in collective shifts, not unlike a diet. (We all know how well crash dieting works….)

While each individual person has specific needs (and tastes) as far as wardrobes go, here are my top ten picks for what every girl should own as she makes her way into the real world:
  1. Navy blazer
  2. Dressy ballet flats
  3. Perfectly fitted black slacks
  4. Oxford shirts
  5. A simple, yet bold, stack
  6. Blouse tank tops for layering
  7. Dress up or down skirts
  8. Colorful cardigans
  9. Age-appropriate business dress
  10. Jeans that you can be proud of

Wherever you’re heading in life, put your best foot (and outfit) forward!

xoxo

Thank you so much, Carly! Don't forget to pop over to The College Prepster to see my picks for the preppy young professional's closet and home.

Here, There, and Everywhere

If you're like me, you can't get enough.

The Bare Necessities

The genius mind behind The Coveteur (formerly known as The Coveted) recently shot a story for Vogue Daily profiling New York Fashion Week essentials of various attendees. The styling is brilliant — hello, martini glasses! — and that hot pink Matthew Williamson cape is killing me.

Olivia Palermo For Tibi

I'm liking what I see in this sneak peek of Olivia Palermo's campaign for Tibi. I love the versatility of her long bob; it looks great whether it's in a bun, loose waves, or blown straight. And the clothes! Oh, the clothes...

Dinner Date

My boyfriend and I will most definitely not be joining the legions of Bucknell couples in one of Lewisburg's few acceptable restaurants this evening. Instead he's planned a little surprise that I'm hoping involves cooking something simple and yummy. The above would work well if you swapped out the wine for champagne, don't you think?

Boho Glam

I'm a little obsessed with this metallic floral dress by Jules Reid. The nipped waist and floor-skimming length are super flattering and the print would add some much-needed panache to my wardrobe of solid colors. The good news? It's on sale. The bad? It's still $477.

Turning Heads Red

Happy Valentine's Day! Whether you're a lover or a cynic of this over-the-top holiday, I hope you'll join me in wearing a little more pink and red than this time of year ordinarily warrants. If you won't spring for the pink dress, how about a red manicure?

Idea Board {Home Office}

I always love this sort of post on other people's blogs so I'm making an effort to publish more of them around here! Idea boards (inspiration boards, mood boards, what have you) definitely take more time to assemble but it's exciting to see it all come together. What do you think of this imaginary home office I designed? The colors remind me of the outfit I styled here.

No. 3 + 4

Number three on my 101 in 1001 list is to move into my first apartment. As many of you know, I am graduating from college in May and have no idea where life will take me this next year. I'll likely live at home for a few months to save up for my own first place, which brings me to number four: to have my first apartment published on a major blog or in an online magazine. You have to aim high!

{rest of my list here, image via here}

Be My Valentine

How do you celebrate Valentine's Day? A cocktail party with the girls or a lovey-dovey dinner date? I'm thinking les deux — a little soirée at our house and a table for two to exchange this year's gift: love letters. I would love to hear your plans!

Better Than Chevron

How great are these two pillows from Aphro Chic? They present an updated take on the chevron trend and I couldn't love it more. I could see the first fitting in quite well in a Rugby store!

Ralph Lauren In Elle Decor

Thank you all for your feedback on the launch of The Design Dialogues! I am so pleased you like it and am already working away on the next installment. Back to our regular programming, however! I will be forever enamored by the crisp and classic appeal of Ralph Lauren. Designed with shiny wood floors and painted industrial columns, his apartment is everything his clothes are: an updated classic. His home is furnished with intention, ignoring the maximalist trend in favor of clean lines, metallic finishes, and regal touches like a fur throw and fully stocked bookshelves. What do you think of his not-so-humble abode?

The Design Dialogues {Bailey McCarthy}

Today I'm pulling back the curtains on Design Darling's first ever interview series, The Design Dialogues. I am thrilled to open the series with style maven and dear friend Bailey Quin McCarthy of Peppermint Bliss and Quin B Studio. In the past year, she has tied the knot, launched her own interior design firm, and most recently announced that she and her husband Pete are expecting their first child. Her blog is equal parts entertaining and inspiring and I'm certain you will enjoy her interview as much as I did. Without further ado, here's Bailey!

Bailey on her honeymoon in September.

Who you are:
A nearly 25-year-old Texan transplant currently living with my husband in Chicago — and expecting our first little bitty baby this summer!

What you do:
I recently started Quin B Studio, my interior decorating business. I do work for both residential and commercial clients in the Chicago area as well as e-decorating for long-distance clients.

Where you do it:
I work from the home office that I recently set up in our garage apartment. It's very professional.

A vignette designed by one of Bailey's style icons, Miles Redd.

Five words to describe yourself...
Impatient, silly, spontaneous, snuggly, creative.

How do you describe your aesthetic?
Traditional with a sense of humor. I don’t like items that just sit there. Your surroundings should engage you, make you laugh, make you smile — otherwise, what’s the point?

Who are your style icons?
I would wear anything Rachel Bilson wore, though not look as good in it. Or Blair Waldorf. I like timeless ladies like Audrey and Gwyneth — aren’t I original? For interior design, it’s Miles Redd all the way. I also quite enjoy your old boss, Jonathan Adler, for his happy chic mentality and 70s influences and Ashley Whittaker for her preppy and youthful vibe.

Bailey's favorite magazine, which she insists on reading from back to front!

Favorite destination:
Germany. I only went once for like four days but it really captured my imagination and I dream often of going back. I loved all of the gingerbread and gothic architecture and think both really influenced a shift in my design aesthetic. Pre-Germany I was very into bright colors, neon even, Mexican art-inspired. My current house is a bit moodier, more black and white and green, which very much reminds me of the German countryside.

Favorite quote:
“Follow your bliss” is not necessarily the most profound of quotations but as a mantra it works pretty well for me!

Favorite site:
Oh snap, this one is hard. Net-a-porter is always a fun way to start a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday morning perusing all the fabulous new merch.

Favorite store:
Kuhl-Linscomb in Houston is heaven on earth. They need, need, need online shopping or better yet to expand — preferably to Chicago first! They have five buildings stocked full of the best in furniture, art, bedding, table settings, accessories, gifts. The buyers there are seriously genius; I always find stuff I don’t see anywhere else and that I have to have.

Favorite thing to read:
Elle Decor — back to front, always.

Favorite thing to watch:
My husband and I are very snuggly TV people. Our favorites are Modern Family, Top Chef, Gossip Girl, and Real Housewives. We like to keep our interests well-rounded.

Favorite thing to wear:
These days? Yoga pants. My pregnant body is a mess and I have no idea how to dress it. Yoga pants are comfortable, stretchy, and give the illusion of athleticism. When I eventually learn how to dress again and thaw out a bit in the frozen hinterlands, I typically favor dresses — girly 50s silhouettes, nipped at the waist.

How did you decide to become an interior designer?
I didn’t study design in college. I grew up with an extremely design-conscious mother who was constantly redoing our homes and it just sort of seeped into my consciousness too. When I moved to Chicago with my now-husband, I found work as an assistant to an interior designer, which I loved. After I broke my foot in a freak dancing accident (editor’s note: only you, Bailey) and was forced into temporary retirement, I dove into my design/lifestyle blog, which started to catch on. By the time my foot healed, my blog had taken off and people were interested in hiring me to do design work for them. After much encouragement from my husband and friends and fellow bloggers, I founded Quin B Studio and started focusing on the blog and my own design work full time! It all just sort of evolved naturally and I don’t think I could have projected a master plan for myself that’s as good as the reality.

What are the most and least glamorous aspects of your job?
While creating beautiful spaces is certainly fulfilling — and hopefully the end result is glamorous — there is nothing glam about workrooms, installations, and the Merchandise Mart where I spend most of my time. It is always a highly uncomfortable temperature. No matter how I dress, I am always sweating and lugging bags full of fabrics and generally not looking like anyone you would ever take style advice from. That said, I think the blog is what brings the most sparkle into my life. I am lucky enough to have very validating readers who encourage me daily and cheer my heart and make me feel mini-famous. Which I very much enjoy.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
My mother-in-law managed to be a really wonderful, involved, traditional Momma and have an incredible career as a lawyer and judge. I always found this somewhat intimidating as I was never hugely ambitious about “having it all.” She taught me to just let things evolve. She told me that she never thought she would work after she had her children, but that opportunities presented themselves when she was ready for them and she just worked hard to be able to take advantage of them. That, and there is no such thing as “having it all.” Something is always going to have to give, and you just have to choose to give yourself to the things that are most important and fulfilling to you.

What advice would you offer aspiring entrepreneurs?
Don’t get too caught up in a master plan. Opportunities arise and the most you can do is be prepared to take full advantage of them. And be brave. I don’t think anyone really properly acknowledges how scary it is to break off on your own. Where I come from, there are very set proscribed paths to follow: high school, college, internship, job, marriage, family, etc. And deviation from that path can often be met by well-meaning (or just plain mean) skepticism. It is hard to find the courage to do something different and put your money where your mouth is — but it is so incredibly rewarding when you do.

Bailey just might be Britney's number one fan.

Three tasks on your to do list.
1. Finish my house and finally have it published.
2. Learn how to take care of a baby.
3. Get my website up and running.

Three items on your wishlist.
1. A magical assistant who is organized and entertaining.
2. The perfect client.
3. A stylist to teach me how to dress my preggo bod.

Three tasks on your bucket list.
1. Acquire patience.
2. Write a New York Times bestseller.
3. Meet and befriend Britney Spears.

Thank you, Bailey! What do you all think of the very first edition of The Design Dialogues?

Kathryn Ireland

A Los Angeles interior and textile designer known for her love of pattern, Kathryn Ireland sticks to her signature style with this colorful bedroom. Large-scale art, embroidered linens, and a Moroccan rug merge to create modern bohemian style that looks equal parts exotic and effortless.

Desk Du Jour

I love this built-in kitchen office with its open shelving and vintage cookbooks. Juxtaposed with the stainless steel stove, it's an attainable alternative to the home office for those without an extra room to convert.

Big Hair & Bright Color

Citrusy hues, simple shifts, fistfuls of gold jewelry, and — my newest discovery — wavy volume. These sassy summer looks are everything a design darling needs to help her survive the rest of winter.

Pink Lady

Black eye makeup is an edgy counterpart to a girlish silhouette and hot pink pumps. In other words, Gwyneth does it again.
